If Scatman Crothers REALLY had The Shining, why didn't he know Nicholson was gonna kill him?

That's true, so I guess the assumption is that:

1). He "saw" danger for Danny and that was his only priority

2). He "saw" danger for Danny but not himself

3). He "saw" danger for Danny AND himself but felt that he had to save him anyway

I dunno...if it were ME, and I met Nicholson for the first time, and I knew he was gonna kill my ass, I would have taken some precautionary measures. That's why I get the impression that the "Shining" may not be all it's cracked up to be.

3. That's because Nicholson was miscast. You knew Jack was crazy from the start.

Casting Steven Weber as Torrance in the TV-movie made more sense. He was more of a likable everyguy who is slowly driven mad by the hotel.

...that scene early in the film, when the guy in charge of the Overlook walks up and asks him if he'd been waiting long and Nicholson says "Not at all, it gave me time to get something to eat" I immediately thought of "I want you to hold the chicken between your KNEES..."

Though he didn't know it would mean his own death, he nevertheless saved Danny.
