2. One of my favorite episodes had June handing Beaver a

present for Miss Landers on the last day of school, a box she thought contained some handkerchiefs but that actually had a slip she had purchased for herself.

The mix-up was discovered, I believe, in time. Still, I can think of few things more embarrassing for a little kid than to unknowingly give his teacher an item of underwear, and have her open it in front of the class.

3. Oh how I love that show! Many people don't realize how progressive

it was for its time.

It tackled a lot of edgy issues from a liberal standpoint:

animal rights/cruelty
child abuse/corporal punishment
divorce

It was also the first TV show to show a toilet on screen!

Although gender work roles were firmly in place, there was a lot of respect and egalitarianism between June and Ward. June often called Ward on his crap and he would acknowledge her viewpoints as valid and correct.

It really was a very liberal show, but it seems like most people look at it as a stereotypical portrayal of 50's repression.

As a fan, you are probably aware of all this, but I always have to make this post when LITB is brought up!

5. Alcoholism was another topic that it dealt with when an uncle came to

visit who had a drinking problem. You're right - very much ahead of its time in some ways.

It also addressed some ethical dilemmas as when Beaver won a bike at the movies when he was supposed to have stayed home all day.

Simple stories with good writing and some sort of positive message. Definitely a fond childhood memory.
