In memory of Alex Chilton - Holocaust (Big Star)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsQ977u8Wuk

One of the saddest songs ever written. And just about the best song about depression ever that isn't credited "L. Cohen."

I used to cry my eyes out to this all the time when I was in high school. I'm doing it again now. Thanks for understanding and being there when I needed you, Alex.

Edited on Thu Mar-18-10 03:37 AM by miscsoc
i posted a link to some other youtube video of it in another thread. it's wonderfully hopeless...such a sense of defeat.

i'm glad other people have cried their eyes out to this.

2. Unbelievably beautiful, isn't it?
"Jesus Christ" from the same album is just about my favorite Christmas song ever too.

3. I first came across this song in the form of this cover:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54Q112QQQjk&feature=PlayList&p=91BC2D2F03D9BDDF&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=71

It's not as sublimely shattered and fragile as the original, by any stretch.

4. "she said, don't be afraid"
Edited on Thu Mar-18-10 03:45 AM by miscsoc
that line is just horrifying to listen to, since she's wrong, and he IS afraid, and she's gone.

6. yeah, and if you were dying and wanted to comfort a loved one,
you very well might say the same thing.

No one who's ever heard this song can escape knowing it's a lie.

5. No, but it's still a good cover.
Son Volt were a great band. A friend of mine was a road/sound guy for them.

the only song i've ever tried to record myself singing. i can't sing or even play guitar competently, but I was besotted by the song to the extent that I gave it a go, using my girlfriend-at-the-time's computer when she was out. I gave up when her flatmate came home, since i was worried he might hear me. Probably for the best. Anyway I basically copied the Son Volt version, since I liked the little guitar fills. Really wish I'd kept the recording, would have been interesting to listen to today.
