Perry is blind.
Most of the time, his caution about his surroundings keeps him safe.
But there was nothing he could do to prevent what happened after he accidentally tapped a stranger with his white cane last Thursday.
"I said, 'I'm sorry about that.' He punched me in the face and knocked me down. He cussed me out and called me a 'blind son of a bitch.' He told me to watch where I was going."
As Perry lay bleeding on the sidewalk outside the Gap at Michigan and Superior, he listened to his scanner and heard Chicago police officers looking for the attacker.
They tracked down Daniel A. Ranft, 44, an unemployed man living at the YMCA on Chicago Avenue. Ranft was charged with simple battery, a misdemeanor.
In 2000 Ranft was charged with trespassing after he was caught peeping into the windows of Cardinal Francis George's residence, but that case was dropped. He could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
