I'm going to New York in July!

I'm going for the Iron Maiden / Dream Theater show at MSG in July. :woohoo:

I haven't been to New York since I turned 21. The hard part will be finding a place to stay that wont completely kill my wallet.

1. I'm probably going next month

My wife wants to make the FDR pilgrimage to Hyde Park, and I hope to see Bad Lieutenant (the new band w/ 3 members of New Order) at Webster Hall.

A suggestion: find a chain hotel over in New Jersey and take a NJ Transit bus into Manhattan. The hotels in the city tend to be insanely expensive, and NY taxes the hell out of you, too.

2. Yeah that's the hard part.

I've been searching hotels in Manhattan and Queens area (near LGA airport - where I'm flying into) and it's fucking ridiculous. Even the ECONOLODGE was $200 a night. Too rich for my blood.

3. The NY hotel tax is around 20%

It's a bit of a hassle to stay in Jersey, but as long as you're near a PATH station or NJ Transit bus line, you'll be ok. We did this a few years back when we went to see a show on Broadway. Stayed at a Comfort Inn or some such thing not far from Giants Stadium and saved a ton.

there are a ton of buses to get into the city from NJ.

Or, you can stay in Stamford, CT and take a train into Grand Central

4. Keep in mind its likely to be hot, and you'll want a pool OR ocean!

5. Try the Holiday Inn on 57th in midtown

My office had me stay there back during the subway strike. Its not fancy but if I remember correctly it was not expensive. Best of all it was clean. It is also near several subway stops, Central Park and Times Square

Quickbook.com has the Park South Hotel for 154.00 on that date. That's a great hotel and not too far from The Garden.

7. We're going in April. My preferred hotel is The Salisbury

on 57th St. near Carnegie Hall. IF we can get a room (it's frequently booked
by Europeans) it usually is less than $200/night. It's a terrific central location, clean,
and the rooms are unusually roomy for NY hotels.

We go to NY at least a couple times a year and it's becoming more of a challenge
every year to book a hotel at a reasonable rate. Enjoy!
