Poll question: Favorite cult film?
Edited on Thu Mar-25-10 05:05 AM by BlueIris
Notice I posted favorite, not best. I also skipped the "Other" option, so feel free to post your Absolute Favorite Cult Film that you're pissed I left out.

Harold: "No. No, I would not say 'benefit'."

Harold & Maude by a landslide for me.

So great. I didn't realize how subversive it was the first time I watched it. Ah, the Clinton years.

8. Its weird,
because when the movie came out it was basically my HS years, and I never heard of it til 97 or so when a buddy of mine wanted me to watch it, but I never got around to it.

An inlaw of mine had it on dvd, and he let me borrow it. I had it for about two months, and he wanted it back, so I had to watch it quick and I was impressed, couldn't believe I missed this gem, and to boot I bought it on dvd this past week(thank god for Hastings).

Its a lot like the Goonies, I heard of it, as a bigger kid everyone called me Chunk, and wanted me to do the truffle shuffle(I had no clue wtf that was), and I didn't watch that flick til 97-98 or so, then it all made sense. :)

27. Pump up the Volume is relevant today
Plus it sort of rekindled my interest in Leonard Cohen -- funny that teen movie leans so heavily on Cohen's music instead of the more pop tunes of the day.

And it has Samantha Mathis with no shirt on :)

110. Yeah, it's always relevant, but even more relevant in the No Child Left Behind era.
Every time I look at what my kids are doing in school, I think of that movie. No one cares about whether the kids are learning, they only care about how the kids score on tests, and for the same reasons as in the movies. Raises, bonuses, and school funding are all tied to tests these days, and so teachers try to hold kids back or get them labeled as special cases all so the scores on these tests will be higher. There's no concern for the kids, only for the test results.

Very relevant film. I think about it often these days.

Plus, it was the last time Christian Slater still had his mojo, when he was still acting like himself instead of trying to act like himself. If that makes sense.

Check up on the IMDB message board for TBL. People in there speak in their own Dude language. They have a DudeFest every year. Our very own Call Me Wesley is a Dudeologist.

Plus it's just such an awesome movie, even if it didn't have a cult following.

12. "Harold and Maude", by far -- one of the best dark comedies EVER
.
However, the brilliance of Bud Cort as leading man seems to never
have been approached again (he played a Norman Bates contemporary
released from the hospital and 'inheriting' the Bates Motel in a
forgettable TV movie and he played an unremarkable role as God
in "Dogma" ("John Doe", who was beaten comatose by the skatepunks
at the beginning of the movie). Prior to that, an equally forgettable
role in the 1970 movie "M*A*S*H*, as the medic Frank Burns blames for
"killing" one of his patients by bringing over the wrong-sized needle
(for which Burns was punched in the face by Hawkeye or Trapper John).
.
Lotsa roles -- none notable (nominated for Golden Globe award for "The
Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, but an ensemble nomination that included
Willem Dafoe, Anjelica Huston, Bill Murray and Jeff Goldblum, among others).
.
Disappointing career for someone who "started out" so spectacularly.
.
The scene where they're having a picnic and Jim Croce's "Where Do the
Children Play" is in the background and the camera draws back forever
'til you realize they're in Arlington National Cemetery and you see row
after row after row after row after row ad infinitum of plain white crosses
is GENIUS!!
.

After the success of "Mock Trial with Judge Reinholdt" there was the spin-off "Bud Cort".

I think he went bald at a young age and had a hard time getting roles because of it.

The good news is that Genndy Tartakovsky is directing, and he demanded they use live puppets as in the original as a condition for his employment. Apparently that was an issue of contention that was holding the film up for years.

26. Harold and Maude by a landslide...
Interesting quote from near the end of Ruth Gordon's biography:

"I never thought I'd ever see a check for Harold and Maude." But, she did near the end of her life start getting paid for her work in the movie. She was on a percentage of the profit contract with that movie.

Boyhood friend of mine was the head of the sound department for H&M.

The movie should really be seen in an old time theater with huge screen. It loses when it is compressed down to a room sized projection.

53. Does "Princess Bride" still count as a 'cult' film?

Seems like it's as widely known and enjoyed as most main stream films now. Or is it just because it took longer than most to reach that point?

76. One of my all-time Coen favorites
Saw it in an art-house theater in Denver in 1984, based on a review by Roger Ebert. Been a Coen fan ever since.

107. Yeah, that one was a nice promise of things to come, wasn't it?
Gritty film, less stylized than some of their more famous stuff. A lot like "No Country For Old Men," without the career's worth of polish and the large cast.

I loved Blue Velvet too, and Eraserhead, well, I can't say I loved that one, it's the most depressing movie ever.

now I gotta go searching for other weird movies I've loved but can't remember the names.......
