A question for the British DUers
What the hell is Marmite?

I was in the UK for the first time last week. Marmite is apparently some kind of spread that comes in jars? And I had some Marmite-flavored potato chips, but they didn't taste much different from regular potato chips... er... crisps.

Help!

It's a spread that you put on toast or in sandwitches. You either love the stuff or loathe it as it has a strong taste. I personally love the stuff. :-)

In Australia they have Vegemite, which is similar.

PS. How was your trip over here? And I agree that those Marmite flavour crisps just do not taste strong enough. You'll just have to have the proper stuff on toast next time.

4. wonderful trip
It was our honeymoon, which for a variety of reasons we held off until a few months after the wedding.

I hear *so* many complaints about the weather in the UK, but I couldn't believe the grass was green. We even got a few days of sun. Contrast this to Massachusetts, where it snowed heavily while we were gone (or so I hear) and the grass is mostly brown.

I just wish the dollar were a little stronger; that's really my only complaint. :)

The weather has been mild the past few weeks I must admit. Whereabouts where you in the UK BTW?

7. London, mainly
We flew into Heathrow and spent two full days in London before taking a day trip to Stonehenge and Salisbury. Then we went to France for a little while via train, and had another day in London at the end of the trip.

3. The Nectar of the Gods
or, sludge from the bottom of a beer barrel, depending on your point of view.

It's 'yeast extract' (Vegemite is the Australian equivalent). It is based on the yeast left over from brewing. It's dark brown. It's also quite salty. Many people love it (eg me - I had to get people to bring me jars to the USA when I worked there), many hate it. The manufacturers recognise this, and base their marketing on it (they sometimes use the slogan 'I Hate Marmite').

The yeast and added B vitamins make it quite a good part of a vegetarian diet too.
