I squished a dog on the way home from work tonight
The dog was black and weighed probably 50 pounds, it was dark out, I didn't even see the SOB until he darted across the road six inches from the front of the car. Thump.

I went to the concrete plant, turned around in their driveway, went back, made sure the dog was dead (it looks like it died on impact), drag the carcass out of the roadway so no one else would hit it...not a real good night here...

1. I feel bad when that happens but there's no way to avoid it.

3. Bummer
The car in front of me hit a dog once, and it was horrific.

I am VERY lucky there wasn't a MASSIVE accident on the 99 because of it. :o

I do NOT miss driving to Stockton once every few weeks. :o

4. "Squished" the "SOB" did you?
At least you were decent enough to go back and ensure the animal had passed.

No tags no collar? No microchip, I would guess then. Sorry for your...pain.

7. No nothing.
There's a trailer court pretty close to where the dog got hit, so it probably belonged to someone in there. I think I'll take a garbage bag with me when I go to work tomorrow, because our local roadkill patrol is so wonderful it'd be there in May if I didn't pick it up.

5. I just missed a black cat on my way home tonight.
On I 75.

Ran in front of me with about 2 feet to spare.

Me: Doing 75 MPH.
Cat: Doing Cat Flat Out speed. (whatever that is in MPH)

It ran from my right to my left into the median. Still had the Southbound lanes to deal with.

6. I hit a cat once, driving on a dark road
probably driving too fast, and it horrified me. I went back, determined that he was dead, picked him up, took him to the animal shelter, and gave him to the personnel there. Cried from the time I hit him till after I got home. I think I've driven slower at night since.

It's an awful feeling.

8. On our nearby city's craigslist lost and found I've seen messages like this one
"This Friday morning at 8:50 A.M. I saw the dog pound picking up a deceased big white dog on the side of Antelope road between Auburn Blvd. and Mariposa. Then about 300 feet or so away from that dog, across the street, was another deceased big brownish red dog. It appeared that they were both probably running together before getting hit. I think that they were labs, but not positive. If you think these may have been your missing dogs, please get more information by calling the dog pound. I don't know what pound picked them up though, but they would have all the info. on them. (I am so sorry for your loss). I hope this at least gives you closure instead of wondering where they are and continuing to look for them."

I think it was kind and considerate of someone to take the time to do this.

I'm sorry you had a dog run into the path of your car. Years ago I had a cat do that at night and I found the body under a hedge next to the road, knocked on doors at nearby houses and described him, but no one knew who he belonged to so I put him in a plastic bag and left him at the county yard gate with a note stating I wasn't sure where to take a dead animal. :(
