1. Just how many science fiction action comedies

can you name, anyway? This flick is funny, well-paced, contains the requisite explosions and other special effects, and has a nearly naked extremely hot Milla Jovovich in the title role. What's not to like?

All right, it doesn't make a lot of sense. Who cares? This is a three-and-a-half popcorns kinda movie, a quintessential guy flick.

3. Welcome to DU!

One thing that I really like about the film is the vision of the future. I mean, I wouldn't necessarily care to live in it, but Besson et al came up with a distinctive, dynamic "world" in which the ridiculous but entertaining story could take place.

I saw it in the theater and just watched a good chunk of it again on HBO. Sure, some of it is clunky, but ultimately I give it an enthusiastic :thumbsup:

5. A character from fiction.

The 1956 science fiction film Forbidden Planet is essentially a remake of Shakespeare's The Tempest; Morbius is the Prospero figure. Dr. Morbius, like Prospero, dabbles in powers greater than humans should mess with. Both characters do the right thing in the end. It's a really cool old sci/fi film, a personal favorite. Some of the scenes, even though the special effects are terribly dated, are still impressive.

In retrospect it's also pretty cool to see Leslie Neilsen as a serious leading man.

6. I haven't seen that movie in forever.

Rats, I was hoping it was going to be Morbius the Living Vampire. I think that would have been cool. Of course, we have vampire groupies floating around the Lounge. I won't mention any names, lest Debi get upset with me.

2. There were parts that I liked. The turtle aliens, for example.

There were parts that I didn't like. The big McDonald's commercial, for example.

The movie would have been much worse off without him. He single handedly demonstrated the idiocy and emptiness of the society humans had created. When Leeloo questioned whether humanity deserved to be saved, you understood where she was coming from...because you'd met Rhod and saw for yourself how fake and empty the society really was.

You weren't supposed to like him.

I love the first scene after he meets Corbin on the starliner, and the radio show goes to break. Ruby Rhod is clearly annoyed at Corbin's flat, monotone delivery, and Rhod's gesticulations just kill me.


I've read criticisms of the character for falling into the standard "comic relief Negro" stereotype, but I see his performance as something different and certainly more sophisticated. For that matter, the film itself is a comedy, so you shouldn't even need comic relief!

Still, I thought he did a decent job at making Ruby Rhod an incredibly annoying character.

29. I thought that Tucker was magnificent in the role

It's easy to conflate his portrayal as R.R. with the other high-pitched, high-strung roles that have become his dubious signature, but his performance in The Fifth Element is really quite different. He's very in control of his voice and his body language throughout the film, with a subtlety that's easily overshadowed by the larger-than-life nature of the character.
