Co-worker who is not from this part of the country: "Have Boughten? It's Have Bought!" |
|
The co-worker today pointed out a funny quirk of the dialect here in the Upper Midwest. We tend to tack on an "-en" on many Past Participles of irregular verbs in a false analogy with past participles like "gotten" and "fallen"
"I've boughten the groceries" "I've caughten the ball" "I've taughten Math for 20 years"
The thing tying all these non-standard forms together is apparently being a strong irregular verb with a past tense form with "aht/awt" in it, thus the false analogy with "get/got/gotten".
What are some weird grammatical quirks in your local speech?

1. I said wastage when talking to someone the other day. |

This person tends to be pretty smart and usually bests me in debates. They said wastage was not a word. So, I broke my Webster's Unabridged out and w00t! there it was.
I had just gotten out of bed and do not know why I used that form of the word. The only thing I can think of is that I was half asleep at the time.
Edited: Typo

Maybe its not regional but it annoys the fuck out of me. It makes people sound like ignorant, illiterate assholes.

6. "drug" for "dragged" and "seen" for "saw" |
|
As in "I didn't want to see that chick flick but my wife drug me to it. So I seen it and it wasn't so bad."
