The Confederates thought they were showing Shaw contempt when they buried him with his men. When he heard this, Shaw's father answered that his son would be proud to rest with such brave men.

Splendid sound track. Some of the members of the Harlem Boy's Choir have to be descendents of some of the men of the 54th - fitting tribute.

7. I didn't know that about the burial

I showed this in class this week. Ironic we are studying the Civil War when the nation is talking about it as well.

The students had to be debriefed on many of the situations as they are all so young and don't understand the nuances of meanings.

For example: the drill Sergeant barking at them and calling them "mexicans et all.

I had to explain that he was not racist, he called them ALL names to break them to get them to come together as a UNIT to keep them alive.

8. It is a dense film, a lot going on

which is why I like it so much. It doesn't insult the audience's intelligence.

As the sergeant told Shaw, they can't be pampered. They'll be on the bus tour through hell and they'll have to be hard to survive. The Confederates gave the black Union soldiers no quarter; if captured they were killed. At the end of the war, about 10% of the Union army were African-Americans.

There were many Irish immigrate soldiers, especially in the Union army. One you might want to show to your students is Gettysburg. An Irish sergeant played by Kevin Conway has a monologue that explains where he and probably drill sergeant were coming from
