...Gil Scott-Heron -- GENIUS proto-rapper, recognized by
many successful rappers well-educated in the history of
their genre as "The Grandfather of Rap".
.
I had read that he just put out his first release in almost a
decade, and I was a little disappointed in the only cut that
I've heard... but this is one blues poet extraordinaire.
.
My absolute FAVORITE of his is less than 3 minutes long and
not one of his better-known pieces, but one of his most
powerful,
IMNEVER
HO. It's about a young man in
Houston(?) who was beaten to death by police.
.
Quiet, truly beautiful rich tapestry of music as a background
and ugly ugly ugly description of truly gross injustice in the
fore.
.
NSFW -- more than a few "motherfuckers" and liberal use of
the N-word eventually -- but not in the way that we have become
accustomed to in way too much of contemporary rap.
