Facebook etiquette.

Okay, this is stupid. And I'm getting my panties in a bunch over something extremely trivial. But it bugs me and I'm going to bitch because that's what I like to do.

I really tire of saying Happy Birthday to someone over there and not getting a thank you. And no, mass thank yours don't count. I spent the time to go over to your goddamn lame wall to say Happy Birthday and I expect you to do the same on my wall. I don't do a status update saying, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ALL MY FRIENDS CELEBRATING THIS WEEK!" so why should I accept that you do a thank you in the same vein?

Often I don't know their numbers. They're generally people I haven't seen in years.

I guess I could take the initiative to get their number - but I think that'd be kind of weird.

Even so, I'm done saying Happy Birthday to anyone. Fuck 'em all.

17. For me, it's a way to stay in touch with my brothers in CA...and

see pictures of my scrumptious niece and nephew. It is the only way I get to talk to my daughter these days... For some of us it's mostly for family and close friends. What makes me laugh is that a couple of people who now dislike me in real life, continue to stay "friends" on facebook. Crazy.

19. In that case, it's not for me.

The few friends I do have, I've had for a long time, actually my closest ones for about 45 years.

But there is a new friend I've met here on DU. A very sweet woman, we're in touch by phone and e-mail and we'll meet in person soon. We live only about a two hour train ride away from each other. And I'm so looking forward to our first visit!

particularly with one close friend I haven't seen in more than 15 years

we trade messages and chat frequently, and FB helps immensely

20. It depends on the friend

if it's one of my best friends, they generally post back individually. If it's an acquaintance, or a friend I haven't spoken to face-to-face in a long time, you might get the mass note.

What I do is write a thank you note, and tag all the people who wished me happy birthday. I then personally thank some of them. It's really not a big deal to me, but it's not like facebook has any real set of behavioral rules as of yet. Ever since it expanded beyond college kids, it's been changing too rapidly to really get a handle on.
