1. Do you think in binary?
There's a pattern I've noticed in your thread postings:

The most _____

The best ______

The worst ______

etc....

re: that record, I've never heard of it before, fwiw.

eom

7. I second that!!!
Great record...

"The Sky is Falling and I want my Mommy" is another great one.

The Myth is Real, Let's Eat!
Lyrics by Jello Biafra

In San Francisco you can be mayor at 18
But ya gotta be 26 to drive a cab

What goes on
Is not what we're told to see

Patrick Henry said "Give me liberty or death"
At the time he owned 65 slaves

The myth is real - Let's eat

Fake patriots say you can't burn the flag
But guess who whines the most
'bout having to pay taxes
To their country
Decay
Decline
Cover up
Refine
Dow Jones
Where's home
When everything we lean on
Is up for sale

Ad lady purrs, "Drink our liquor, you'll get laid"
Next billboard says, "Don't drink and drive"

What goes on is not what we're told to see
Panic! Panic! War on Drugs
But you can buy beer at gas stations

The Myth is Real - Let's Eat

Pagan priests first used perfume
To mask the smell of burning flesh
Back in ancient Rome
The statues were unscrewed
Leaders change - just replace the heads

Decay
Decline
Cover up
Refine
We are
In life
Roulette wheel
Or the ball inside

Anyone out there stopped to think
What our lives might be like today
If Karl Marx was as good a salesman
As Walt Disney

The bacon brought
You home to cook
The lobster lets
Itself get boiled
Looks too hard to climb
Out of the pot with all the crabs
Fear the unknown -
Who taught you that?

One hundred million trees a year
Get made into junk mail no one reads
What goes on is not what we're told to see

Half of all Americans don't read books
I'm one of them, but you're reading this

The Myth is Real - Let's Eat

General Robert E. Lee
Freed his slaves before Grant freed his
Brian Willson's legs
Severed by a train
The crew sues him for stress

Levis were once made of hemp *
From the marijuana plant
One acre makes four times more paper
Than an acre of trees

More protein than soy beans
Threat to logging companies
Du Pont and tobacco barons
Got it banned in '37

The world is made of connections
So many sheep in wolf's clothing
Scary times are never dull
How long before our empire falls

No one wants the Pentagon
Toilets for six hundred bucks
Japanese spend twice as much
On pinball as defense

Meanwhile concerned citizens
In Albany, Oregon
Try to ban a book
'Cos it makes fun of Santa Claus

We're told 80% of people like the President in the polls
While only 15% believe he's in control
And 64% of lowans surveyed
Want to be reincarnated as themselves

Wowee...

10. It sounds like a modern day version of the early 90's San Diego punk stuff
hardcore punk of the era, like Angel Hair and Heroin.

19. maybe I'm time-warped
I still consider "early 90s" to be "modern day." It's likely because I missed out on so much great stuff that was brand new then. In the early 90s, I was exploring pseudo-hippiedom, and my musical tastes at the time were pretty much the Dead, the Beatles, and Dylan. Fairly limiting. To just now be discovering that punk really did survive the early 80s is SO MUCH FUN!

5. How about this one?

The back of the album is funnier. Here's what it sort of looks like.

And yes, that is W as Ronald MacDonald. And yes, that is a pretzel around his neck.

6. Kris Kristofferson's new "Broken Song of Freedom"
that was recorded live recently in San Francisco. A mix of classic Kris songs, new songs and some updated songs. A potent anti-war, anti-regime message. Extremely powerful.

8. Bach's "St. Matthew's Passion"
In my opinion, it certainly could be . . . you get the words and actions of the most leftist political/religious person of all time (and for the Christians: the most leftist/political person who WAS GOD INCARNATE ON EARTH of all time).

That's gotta carry some weight...

11. or possibly "Animals" by Floyd
Edited on Wed Aug-13-03 09:38 PM by Rabrrrrrr
Though I'm sure, and I say this as one who is condemnable for my ignorance of his music, the "Alice's Restaurant" singer, whose name totally escapes me for which I am even more deserving of condemnation. Or his father - not sure who would be more leftist, but they must be up there.

And I think we also need to include George Crumb (at least for Black Angels, plus much much more), John Corigliano (for Symphony #1) and John Cage.

On edit: The Guthries! That's what I meant. Of course, it came to me just as soon as I hit "update message". Unless I'm wrong, in which case you should tell me.

12. Michael Franti Stay Human
We livin' in a mean time and an aggressive time
a painful time, a time where cynicism rots to the vine
in a time where violence blocks the summer shine
lifetimes, go by in a flash
in search for love, in search for cash
everybody wanna be some fat tycoon
everybody wanna be on a tropic honeymoon
nobody wanna sing a little bit out of tune
or be the backbone of a rebel platoon
it's too soon to step out of line
you might get laughed at you might get fined
but do you feel me when I say I feel pain everyday
when I see the way my friends gotta slave
and never get ahead of bills they gotta pay
no way no way!
some make a living doing killilng Colombian penicillin
some are willing to play the villain they just chillin'
to pass the time, pass the information
or pass the wine
pass the buck or pass the baton
but you can't pass the police or the pentagon
the I.R.S. or the upper echelon
I think it's time to make a move on the contradiction

(chorus)
Bam-Bam, rock the nation
take over television and radio station

Bam-Bam the truth shall come
give the corporation some complication!

This is the dawning of our time I say it one more time
to emphasize the meaning of my rhyme
to rise above all the dirt and grime
add the right spice at the right time
fuck the constitution
are we part of the solution or are we part of the pollution
sittin' by and wonderin' why,
things ain't the way we like to find them to be, to be
for you and for me the people over there and the ones in between
check our habitation are we a peace lovin' nation
peace lovin' nation
I have a reasonable doubt I think I'll just spell it out
there's no need to scream or to shout
the N.R.A. just bought a man's soul
then he jumps up and shouts gun control
the government says that killin's a sin
unless you kill a murderer with a lethal syringe
so I ask again "are we peace lover's then"
some of them slang guns when they six years old
some of them end up in some six foot hole
this whole damn place seems to, lost control
so I raise my voice before I lose my soul
(chorus)

This is the way I'll express my feelings
vibe revealed and revolved spinnin on a record y'all
try to confiscate take what I communicate with
it's ancient gift of the lip steady creating
activating passin vocal vibrations to the blind plus the seeing
human doesn't mean just being
be coming don't believe it just belife it
belongings or beloved rehearse it or recite it
while shining drop your guns and move your tongues
battle motivation in no time lyrics come
sometimes fun others run their mouth or away
my mind co beaming like an early sunray
one day we'll get the picture and all combine
less the talking bout mines is mine and become one mind
every piece of the puzzle has its place
to build the piece of the puzzle called the human race

taking it long enough we crush the formal journalistic
dyslexic critters talk backwards to rap words
I'm sure raising my hands with questions and demands
statements and a plan with a map of the land
(chorus)

15. The Final Cut!
Ostensibly a Pink Floyd album, Roger Waters wrote every bit of this album. It is very left wing and anti- war and one of my favorite albums of all time. Many disagree with that...

16. Heavy Horses
Without a doubt. The lyrics may not be all that leftists. In fact, Anderson's rustic longing borders on being reactionary, but there's no denying the pure leftist soul expressed in the way he bends those acoustic notes, or cries "tumbling sky" on the title track. A classic if there ever was one.
