Because I had lost interest in Top 40 by 1985, I'm not as intimately familiar with a lot of the #2 hits of the past 19 or so years as I am with the tunes in my previous polls. As such, I apologize in advance if I offer any poll choices that really, truly suck! :shrug:

Like you, I had lost interest in top 40 by 1985. I had heard of Prince, but Purple Rain was the first song by him I actually heard. Nice guitar bit at the end.

5. 'Money For Nothing' is at least a great song

Excellent riff, wussy Sting vocals that rip off his own hits, and Mark Knopfler wheezing out his odd and potentially offensive lyrics. :D

I love that song. Is that the one that had a pre-skeletal Courtney Cox in the video?

Purple Rain would be my second choice. I think I have the 45 in purple vinyl. It's one of the only two Prince songs I like (the other being When Doves Cry.)

I actually thoroughly enjoy late 70's-80's commercial pop.

When I listen to music, I generally enjoy good catchy tunes that make me feel good. I really don't care who wrote the song. I don't care if any given song's style is original. I really don't care if the lyrics are compelling. If a song sounds good to me, I listen to it.

7. Madonna was better than she's generally given credit for.

And I'm firmly convinced that sexism, even from liberals, has had a lot to do with her lack of critical respect. After all, Madonna is a strong, take-charge woman who is brash about her sexuality. How dare she?!

I've always found it interesting that the same rock critics (and fans) who've condemned Madonna for her sex-related exploits were always willing to give a nudge and a wink to somebody like Mick Jagger for similar behavior.
