Electric Guitars: Discussion and Recommendations.

So I've been taking Guitar lessons for about two months and I am really enjoying it. I bought my first guitar about 3 months ago on impulse...I had been feeling depressed, and decided that maybe getting a new hobby would be fun. So I went to the guitar store, and bought a Fender Squire Strat Affiniy Series Guitar Package, which came with a guitar, a decent enough practice amp, and some other odds and ends.

I liked the guitar enough, and what I thought might become a distraction has actually become a hobby that I'm really into. However, the other day, I was curious to try another guitar, and my instructor allowed me to try out his spiffy guitar (can't remember the make, but he said it was about 1500 dollar guitar). Holy shit...it was more comfortable and a dream to play.

So now, I'm thinking it's time for me to invest in a new guitar....something a little bit more pricey and better sounding. I'm wondering if anybody has any recommendations? I'm not rich, but I am willing to spend between 400 and 700 bucks...call it a mid-range guitar. What do you guys play? Any brand you find really sweet? I'm obviously not going to do the impulse buy for an expensive guitar, and I will try out any guitar before I buy it. But I'm just looking for a place to start.

P.s. I like to play rock music.

1. Find a used guitar you feel comfortable playing, shop the stores...

Wait until you have at least a year or two before you shell out 1,500....

2. Ha..there is no way I can afford a 1500 dollar guitar.

Being used might be a good idea though...I'll have to have a look. Any models you like?

4. I haven't bought an electric in years...

Last one I bought was a kramer.

I just bought a Martin that has a built in pick-up.

I would suggest looking at a guitar that doesn't fight back at you.

Look down the neck to make sure it's not warped. Check and make sure that the strings are the same height all the way down the neck.

And, perhaps the most important thing of all, make sure it looks cool to the lady's...

3. When I played, I always liked BC Rich.

Much cheaper (at least around here) than Gibson/Fender/etc. Might just be the name. Brand new Gunslinger costs around $500.

However, if I was serious about buying a crazy guitar? It would be a Gibson SG. Because then I could pretend I was Angus Young.

5. Fender guitars have a longer scale - there is more distance between the notes on the board, while

Gibsons have a shorter scale, easier to play for people with smallrer hands. The best thing to do is to try a lot of guitars at local music stores and see what you like best. Some will be much more of a "fit" for you than others.
Besides, then you will get to play a lot of eifferent guitars...

You should be able to get a very good used guitar for $400 or so.

Look around and see what you think (I have 7 electric guitars of various types, so it's hard to recommend one specific type, but I like SG's and Les Paul's, but also Tele's and Strats when I'm in the mood...they all make different sounds and have different playing characteristics.)
