Poll question: Favorite Beatles B-side
Edited on Fri Mar-26-04 08:24 AM by mac56
For you young'uns - a "B-side" was the "non-hit" song on a "45 rpm single". Often they were songs that didn't make it onto an "album". The Beatles were legendary for putting some of their more creative numbers on the "flip" of a hit song.

Historical curiosity: The lads released two singles wherein both sides were designated the A-side, or hit: "Day Tripper"/"We Can Work It Out" and "Penny Lane"/"Strawberry Fields Forever".

Any favorites from among these? Or another? Explain why.

2. For some reason the poll wouldn't list my entries.
Had to re-enter and send it through again.

4. Revolution (oh the good old days!)
You say you want a revolution
Well you know
We all want to change the world
You tell me that it's evolution
Well you know
We all want to change the world
But when you talk about destruction
Don't you know you can count me out
Don't you know it's gonna be alright
Alright... Alright
You say you got a real solution
Well you know
We'd all love to see the plan
You ask me for a contribution
Well you know
We're doing what we can
But when you want money for people with minds that hate
All I can tell you is brother you have to wait
Don't you know it's gonna be alright
Alright... Alright

You say you'll change the constitution
Well you know
We all want to change your head
You tell me it's the institution
Well you know
You better free your mind instead
But if you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao
You ain't going to make it with anyone anyhow
Don't you know know it's gonna be alright
Alright... Alright

17. See above.
Both "Penny Lane" and "Strawberry Fields Forever" were A-sides. They did that twice.

22. Well then, philosophically speaking ..
That means they were both "B" sides, too!! (Each was the flip side side of an "A" side).

So my answer is:

EITHER "Penny Lane" OR "Strawberry Fields" or BOTH!

I said "Come Together" though. It's a tough choice though, I like a lot of the Beetles music (virtually all of it)

Paperback Writer.

I like the part of Rain with the backwards lyrics. :)

10. Had to go with "Walrus," but they're all great...
as anything by the Beatles is. Another of my favorite "B" sides is "There's a Place." I think it may have been the flip side of "She Loves You," but I'm not sure. :-)

Never on a single.

13. Voted for Revolution
because I think it's the B-side that is most A-side-esque

But I also really like "Don't Let me Down"..."I'm in love for the first time..don't you know it's gonna last.." Hearing it always reminds me of them doing their rooftop concert. :)

14. "Yellow Submarine" was not a non-hit.
In fact, it charted even higher than "Eleanor Rigby."

20. I used the term "non-hit" loosely.
Generally what a B-side was considered to be. Shorthand only.

21. Hairsplitting department -
Edited on Fri Mar-26-04 04:30 PM by mac56
Not that it matters -

but "This Boy" was the flip for the British release of "I Want To Hold Your Hand".

Judges say either answer is acceptable. Carry on.
