I'm drinking Laphroaig.....ask me anything!
I.e. I am drinking something called Laphroaig, it's not that I've adopted the nickname of "Drinking Laphroaig - the Drinkingest Laphroaig in the whole goddamn world!"

Although I might.

11. I'm guessing...
...because Laphroaig is better.

Actually, I don't know if I believe that. It's like being asked to choose which of your children you love the most.

Anyway, there is quite a severe shortage of Lagavulin, and prices have gone through the roof.

7. Ah Laphroaig - I envy you
However, it's only 8:00 am here so it's a little early for me to have a whisky. But tonight - I get to go to work at an officer's mess where they have about 110 different single malts. I usually get my choice at least once in an evening. I think tonight I'll have a Bowmore 30 yo. It is sooooo tasty. Enjoy your weekend.

13. Nice!
I was working in Scotland last year and got to try lots of different single malts.

However, my great job recently was trying the different 25 year old ports at the Seppelt winery in Australia......Every year they put down a barrel of port and don't release it for 100 years, and they also have various different ages in between.....MMmmmmmmmm......!

26. Not in Stirling, Scotland...
My dad had always recommended it, but when I went to Scotland I asked the barman in the well-stocked hotel bar to recommend a single malt to try.

Highland Park was the reply.

I went to another well-stocked bar.....Same reply.

It IS good whisky, but the thing is you can buy it in MANY pubs in the UK, so I wanted something a bit more special.

One of the cheaper single malts by quite a way, and not bad.

Glenmorangie is found in most pubs and booze shops, and is also decent.

On edit: BALLS, sorry, that was the price for Laphroaig...

Aberlour is: £22 for the 10 year old, £30 for the 15.

I've been out of the country for a while, but it used to be cheap.

I've found it at £23 here:

http://shopping.lycos.co.uk/products/laphroaig_10_year_old_whisky.html

I'm sure you can get it for less than that.......

Abelour is nice, and also cheaper (IIRC and prices haven't changed).

46. It's WAY Cheaper Here!
I usually pay under $25 for a fifth. That's about 18 pounds, right?

I can get the 15 year old port finish for about $45 to 47. And that's a fifteen year aged!

You folks must have high liquor taxes to drive the cost up to the point where it's more expensive than in the U.S. despite the 4000 mile shipping cost.

48. I have never seen Aberlour for under $25
You must have a GREAT source. Of course, I do live in the DC area so EVERYTHING is expensive!

And yes the UK has VERY high liquor taxes. The first bottle of single malt I ever bought (Glenlivet)was in a US military Class 6 store (when they still existed). It cost me $6.00 (NO taxes whatsoever). The cost in the US was $27 and the cost on the local British economy was 18 pounds (rate was 1.50 to 1).

We get to taste Abunadh (sp) which is a beautiful whisky.

Now I know why your name is LagaLover. You love Lagavulin. And because it is now almost non-existent in Victoria, I'll be down to see you when I run out of mine.

I belong to a single malt club here: http://www.victoriasinglemaltclub.com

Take a peek at the web site - it's brand new - the web site that is.

45. That's Why I Buy It
It's the best bang for the buck. However, the port or madeira finish version (which are all 2 or 5 years older), are quite a bit pricier.

But, their standard 10 year old, is among the cheapest of the single malts here in the states, and i think it's awfully good for the price.

I like the older GM's, though. The 12 is ok, but i like the 18 or 30, although the 30 is ridiculously expensive. (About $170 per fifth.)

29. A note on "trying too hard" and "not getting it at all"....
I was in Stirling, Scotland, dining by myself in a very nice restaurant (I was on business, and anyway, nobody likes me).

A nice American couple and their daughter come in and sit down. I overhear them order some really decent food, asking about specialities and really making the most of the local produce.

Unfortunately, in an attempt to "fit in" a little too much, the father refused the wine list and insisted on drinking whisky with his first course and main course......which kinda kills the flavours of both the drink and the food.

Worse than this (brace yourself) after asking the waiter his recommendation for a single malt whisky, the father asked for a Highland Park and then added "And top up the glass with Coke please....."

One of those moments where the waiter looks at you and just shakes his head.......

:-)
