My dog is home, recovering from major knee surgery
This is going to be a tough few days (and weeks). Recovery time is typically 4-6 weeks. She can't jump, run, or play with her ball. Unfortunately she lives to run, jump and play. She's calm and resting right now due to the Limbaugh cocktail the vet gave her.

Does anyone have any advice how to keep an borderline hyperactive dog calm for weeks on end? I don't want to have to crate her, but I might have to. She hates to be locked up.

1. If she's that active , either crate her or keep her in the bathroom
but crating is the safest alternative for her knee. Did they splint it?

4. No splint
It's just shaved and stapled. Fortunately she's very skilled at using only three legs and she's already doing a fine job keeping all her weight off of it. I guess it's a good time to get her used to the crate again. I work at home, so it hasn't been necessary until now.

5. She'll bark for a bit but will then lay down
I have to crate my guy from time to time...now he just gets in it willingly.

6. Depends on the dog.
Some are more stubborn than others.

2. keep her tranq'd out. It won't hurt her a bit to keep her sedated...
it works fine on US.

3. If she had the surgery I think she had, crate her.

If she jumps or runs and blows the leg out, it's going to be much, much worse than facing a few weeks in a crate. Take no chances! She will be as good as new in two to three months, ready for a wonderful summer!

I know it's hard, but you've got to do it.

Spend as much time as possible with her, petting her, scratching her back or belly, whatever she likes. And do things by her, read a book next to her, even if she's in a crate. Or put the crate next your computer. Give her company in as many ways possible throughout this ordeal.

Good luck.

7. take no chances . . . crate her AND . . .
stock up on some mild doggy downers . . . they'll keep her calm and less upset about being crated . . . a few nice chew toys would help, too . . .
