OK, so here's my problem with hippies.
...And it's not what you think.

Can someone explain why any combination of the terms "natural", "organic", and "cruelty-free" on a package of anything means that the packaging itself is going to be sub-par?

My natural ancient-grain cereal: thin, flimsy box, inside liner split down the side when I opened it.

My organic chips bag: pulled it open and it tore in catastrophic places.

My free-range chicken: sloshing around in plastic bag that doesn't seem to close tightly. I won't mention the high feather count.

My pesticide-free beans can: thin, cheap rim on can makes getting the can-opener hooked on a half-hour task.

Sure, the food tastes better and is better for you. But at what cost?!? :D

Doesn't sound like anything I buy at my organic co-op
Everything there is first rate - and the produce is better than my local big-name supermarket.

BTW - it has nothing to do with hippies...

4. Oh, yeah, this ain't about produce...
My farmer's market could kick anyone's butt on produce.

And I know it's not about hippies. :) Mrs. Robb and I use "hippy" to distinguish between organic and non-organic products -- as in "No no, get the good hippy kind".

As I think about it, I believe it evolved from referring to free-range chickens as "happy chickens", for the same reasons ("No no, get a good happy chicken").

7. Clarification...
Edited on Fri Mar-26-04 04:11 PM by jpak
The quality of the snacks, meats (free range yak and dingbat) canned goods, breads, etc. etc. at the place I go to are equal or better in quality than what I can find at my local big-named grocery...

and since I'm a member of the co-op - it's cheap. I fill up a shopping cart every week and think - "Keerist! I just spent a fortune on this stuff"

A weeks worth of food + wine and hard cider = ~$60

My only gripe with my co-op is I can't walk to the place (it's ~5 miles away).

:)

Yuppies do. Hippies eat food from gardens & trees.
