I am opening a vintage clothing store and we had a web page set-up to eventually do sales from. I would like to know what exactly entails a "page" as we are paying by the page. I am being told the web page is 10 pages long but I do not see it. Thanks. I will private mail the page to those that respond and wish to help. TIA.
normally a page is one single URL ie: index.html or page2.html
no matter how physically long it is.
typical small biz site
index about team history contact products prod one prod two
8 pages
on edit: I think you are making a common mistake in calling a "site" a page. developers look at pages as the individual parts of a static site that combined make up a site.
You're being ripped off man. What if your store had a 100 products, each one of which could be displayed on a separate page... Would your site then be 100+ pages?
I do web dev and for an e-commerce site I charge BY the site + any out of the ordinary changes requested. For instance, I usually use OS Commerce or ZenCart and customize from there. If the customer wants anything beyond simple CSS changes, it's more money especially if it involves (re)writing code or creating custom graphics (logos, backgrounds, etc.).
I was talking about his current web dev outfit. You actually posted while I was composing my reply so I can see how it looks like I'm calling BS on your message.
12. so has anyone here done web dev for online bookstores?
and if so, wanna pm me with the url?
I'm trying to figure out what I need to do (and I realize I need to get professional help with this...it's a very small biz, but very data entry intensive, with a need to be able to search for, say, 4000 individual items...
I already have a database manager for the actual items, btw...
I'd PM you, but I don't have enough posts yet to use that feature...
I just did a bookstore for a small independent rare and out-of-print bookseller specialising in books pertaining to South and Central Asia.
I did a ZenCart installation and then modified it to fit this person's needs. For instance, as 99% of his books are, shall we say, rather dry and technical, there was no need for pictures so I removed that feature. Also, since ZenCart tends to be oriented toward merchandise I customized all of the hard coded messages to reflect that this was a book store (i.e. changed 'product' to 'book').
This bookseller uses Homebase 2 to manage their inventory, as they've been a member of http://www.abebooks.com|ABE> for many years and it works for them. So, I wrote a custom PHP script that allows the seller to upload his Homebase 2 file, parses it and performs the correct queries on the MySQL database that ZenCart uses.
I'm also currently working on another ZenCart install for a folk artist. Development on this has stalled as I am waiting for him to decide exactly what he wants to do, although the site is up and functional with minimal configuration (custom colors, logo, etc.)
I would post URLs for you to check out, but I'm not sure if the moderators would approve of me posting to personal sites. Instead I will link you to the http://zencart.com|ZenCart> site. ZenCart is derived from http://oscommerce.org|OSCommerce> which I also wholeheartedly recommend. There are many webhosts out there (including myself) who will install either of these pieces of software for you. I personally charge a moderate fee for installation. Again, I won't go into pricing details as I don't think this is the place for it.
Look up my e-mail if you want to ask me more questions, I'll help out another DU'er all I can.
PS: The bookseller I mentioned was Vice-Consul to Pakistan in the mid 1950s through the early 1960s and is extremely critical of Bush foreign policy, especially as it relates to the middle-east.
