Who was really the King of Rock And Roll?
I say it was Johnny Cash, although you could make a real good case for Little Richard!

1. Chuck Berry. Cash was a C&W artist. Not R&R.

6. Buddy Holly
Way cooler than Elvis, put much more of a mark on rock and roll. Still influences the music today. And did it all in less time, RIP.

31. Yes, indeed. BUDDY HOLLY!
Edited on Tue Mar-30-04 08:58 AM by HuckleB
Without Holly, the face of rock and roll would be incredibly different. Without Elvis, it would have turned out much the same.

Holly's influence makes him King!

7. It wasn't Johnny Cash
There was some crossover of artists in the 50s and 60s, but Johnny Cash
wasn't really rock 'n roll, rockabilly maybe, but basically Country.

14. They Were Doo-Wop
For hard-edged R&R, it HAS to be Chuck Berry.

22. That's what we label them today.
But in the 1950's we weren't so quick to categorize music. Doo Wop was a term (circa 1970's) that has been applied to primarily black singing groups from that era but no less rock and roll. Alan Freed, who coined the phrase rock and roll, included in his promotions many groups we now consider Doo Wop including the Modernaires.

Hip hop, grunge, alternative, metal, rap, top 40, punk, country, crossover are slots we tend to shove music into today. It was all rock and roll way back when. The origins of Freed's rock and roll may have been rooted in a combination of jazz, gospel and r & b. Fred Paris was certainly active in creating his own mix of these genres to record classics like "In the Still of the Night". Boogie Woogie it wasn't but in my opinion was a part of the Phenom known as rock and roll.

24. He came out with "Rock Around The Clock"
in the early '50s. If I am correct, that was the start of Rock and Roll. That's why I call him the King.

27. Did somebody mention ELVIS?
jchild knows it'll set off my ElReyDar every time...

It's Elvis all the way, baby. Iconoclasts won't agree on principle, and neither will those who equate commercial success with lack of substance (or those who still buy the hoary old myth of Elvis 'stealing' a musical form), but he deserves the title if only because of the immensity of his impact. The fact that he turned out some of the best vocals ever recorded is just a bonus, as is the fact that he's a contender for the title of the founder of rock 'n' roll, but neither quality nor priority of claim to the rock genre is necessary for the kingly title. If you prefer, look at the second and subsequent generations of rock 'n' rollers (and performers within country, R&B, and other genres) and trace back their influences...Elvis is everywhere.

He didn't like ther title, and he wasn't all that keen on a lot of rock 'n' roll, but Elvis was the King.

Johnny Cash ruled in his own way.

And, of course, Clifton Chenier was the King of Zydeco!
