28. Amen!!! Love this band!
I just read where they are re-mastering "The Swimming Pool Q's" and "Blue Tomorrow" (read it on Facebook). I cannot wait to get these albums!

The Swimming Pool Q's Remastered CD and Digital releases of both "The Swimming Pool Q's" and "Blue Tomorrow" are currently still in the making. There will be bonus tracks, extensive liner notes, unreleased photographs and more! Please keep checking back here, and on the Q's official website. We do not have a release date yet, but keep watching!

10. Cats In Boots
This was a hard rock band from the late eighties that only had one album, but IMHO it was a great one. The band had two American members and two members who were from Japan. They didn't really speak each other's languages but they spoke the language of music very well together. Not many people in this country were aware of them, but they did pretty well in Japan. This was pretty much my favorite band back then, and I still play their CD.

31. I was working nights at an NBC radio affiliate in the 1980s.
NBC radio had talk shows at night. Sally Jesse Raphael, Ira Fistell and Ray Breem were among the hosts. I heard that phone call segment live. It was as sickening the first time. Raw, unbridled fear mongering and a mistake non-corrected which Briem then turns into a lie to maginify the fear effect. (The USA has six time zones. GMT-4 through -8) Blew me away when I first heard the Negativland piece Time Zones on KXLU in 1988 or 9.

Good goddamn how I hated working that shift listening to Ray Breem.

Eleven. Eee-leven. I hate that bastard.

34. Interesting background there :)
Because someone else had told me it was Ted Koppel, but I think they were just going by the sound of his voice. Perhaps the "Glen" that called in had the last name of "Beck" considering the rather conspiratorial nature of his "topics" ;)

36. Yeah, I don't know how the Ted Koppel rumor started because...
... it most certainly does not sound like him. Also, Koppel did not do a radio show in the 80s and was not such a transparent hack. Ray Breim is a George Puttnam-style Bircher fascist. But he's got great pipes.

37. He certainly has that "broadcast voice".
I've met radio people in person that continued to speak with "that voice". The whole time I was thinking, "Can't you turn that speaking-style off?" ;)

However, I will say, despite knowing the facts now, it still sounds like Koppel to me. I don't know if this is because that's what I've thought for years and years, or if there's just a strong similarity to my ears. Plus, where negativland is concerned, it matters not if a sampled voice is from radio, TV, film or commercials... :)

38. I have a keen ear for voices so Koppel's clipped and inflected voice is very distinct for me.
And not at all like Breim's relaxed mid-west natural baritone. Put them up side-by-side and the difference will be obvious to even the most casual listener. Anyways, having heard the call live while working the control board for an NBC affiliate carrying the show I know the source.

As for "the voice", voice training is a part of broadcasting. There are excercises to losen, relax and deepen the timber of the voice as well as training to lose regionalism. I had quite the east Texas twang before my training. No more. Smoking is also a good way to enhance a deep, resonant voice but the trade-offs were not worth it for me.

39. Okay, I'll take your word for it on Koppel :)
As for the radio-voice, luckily, the little bit of commercial radio work I've done, I only had to play the corporate playlist and not go on mic (the station was in a transition period from one format to another.) In public radio, we weren't so strict and I love that about the public spectrum. Anti-professionalism, and loving it! :D

42. Aw, man! Check it out!
I went to negativland.com and emailed one of the guys. He replied. I was wrong!

(GMF),
No, it's a guy we know here with a similar voice (also an announcer).
Thanks for remembering...
DJ

My reply back:

Doh!
The similar messages is not surprising, although in this days the hosts didn't get an email from CEI but a newsletter from Richard Viguerie. I recall the first time I heard the "my son was recruited at a construction site" meme. Soon after it was everywhere.

Still don't know who it was.

43. Wow, that's great that they got back to you :)
I hadn't known you had written them, but I do know they're pretty approachable guys. I've talked to Mark Hosler, one of the founders (in fact, I introduced a former co-worker to the music, and Mark thanked me for making his and her relationship possible.)

It's too bad we are now back where we started with regards to who this was. Did they give the name of the announcer that was speaking to Yuma? :)

Since the name was not given I didn't feel like I should ask. Like maybe they don't want to give it out. So, yeah, we are back to square one, LOL.

Check the page for the U2 CD. There is a little gift there.

A friend has the original EP-CD and kept it when the order was given for all copies to be returned for court-ordered destruction. It makes me wonder when corporate labels make such demands how often anyone does as "requested" ;)

50. I always figured that Sky Cries Mary would have been bigger.
They had a huge and devoted following in Seattle back when grunge was king. While they were not grunge at all, they did have a '70s-rock-updated-for-the-'90s sound that would have fit in well with lots of other stuff that was popular at the time. Great stage show too, with trippy lightshows and elaborate costumes too.
