When did lease agreements start requiring 60 days notice instead of 30? |
|
My boyfriend has moved to another city about 2 hours away so he will only be here on weekends. I am looking for work up there but it may be a while before I find it. But if I do, I assume they will want me to start in about a month or so but I have a lease that requires 2 months notice. I know I cannot afford to pay rent on two places at the same time (or to pay the current apartment for two months after I move. I am not sure what to do (other than to never rent again, because tenants have NO rights as far as I can see).

what are the rules for changing your mind? maybe give the notice and then change your mind in a few weeks, then do it again until such time as you really are ready to move}(

2. A lease can say anything. |
|
Could you sublet your place for a month? Or, maybe negotiate the notice with your landlord?

3. Well I am going to speak to them before the lease ends no matter what, |

If I cannot find a job up there before then, I will have to move out of this apartment at least because the rent is too high for me to manage on my own. If they cannot move on the 60 days thing, then I will go somewhere else. Moving into another apartment in this complex or one somewhere else is not much different.

Keep in mind that it is usually from the first of the month and usually WRITTEN notice is required. I would not trust anything verbal since the rental market is pretty poor most places. Do ask your landlord if you can change the notice to 30 days (from the first of the month or whatever else your lease stipulates)...just be sure to get it in writing SIGNED and dated by the landlord.
Can you move in with your boyfriend before signing another lease, especially if you have to begin work early before your 60 days is up? It would also probably involve renting a storage unit for your stuff.
Another thing to watch our for is self-renewing leases. I have seen a few of these and feel it is really underhanded.
Don't forget to take pictures of how you left the place. You are also entitled to a walk-through upon moving out.
I had a tenant who tried to sue me for her security deposit. I had taken pictures before and after...plus she had signed a form upon moving in that everything was fine (except for a known stain on the carpet I did not hold her liable for)
She complained to the Housing Authority but after I produced before and after pictures and her signed/dated acknowledgment of the condition, she was out of luck. Damned biddy broke a piece off the stove and left the place a mess, too.
I am not one of the evil landlords out there and I do accept verbal notices....I just don't trust anyone else!
Best of luck to you!
