Damn you, Safeway Primo Taglio Mozzarella, Prosciutto & Basil Roll...why must you be so delicious?

This is not a photo of the ACTUAL Safeway product. But it's close enough to give you an idea of what it looks like. A roll approximately the size of a hot dog bun costs $7. I don't even want to think about the calories.

OK, I swapped out the previous photo. This one looks even less like the Safeway roll because there is no prosciutto on the outside, just the inside. If it's another pink triangle, I'm callin' it a DAY.

...if not, it's basically a jelly roll-style roll-up of mozzarella, prosciutto and fresh basil leaf. It looks great sliced and tastes even better.

But honestly, it's not floating my olive-oil-soaked Italian heart, because my aunt makes something similar with better bread--essentially pizza dough--sort of like a stromboli, only better. I'm all :9 just thinking about it.

9. "Stuffed Pizza" used to be an Italian / Easter tradition in my family

Man oh man oh MAN did I look forward to her sending stuffed pizza home with my dad.

It's basically ham or prosciutto plus eggs and cheese cooked in pizza dough...you can either do it turnover-style or make it in a springform pan. I've seen many different recipes, some of which add ingredients that were never in the version I remember and shouldn't be in there either. I have a recipe from the 1980 version of the Good Housekeeping Cookbook that calls it "Italian Cheese and Ham Pie," with the ingredients being cottage cheese, ricotta cheese, diced ham, Parmesan cheese, eggs, Italian seasoning, and traditional pie crust instead of pizza dough.

Speaking of stuffed dough, I've been on a quest to find a decent calzone ever since I got spoiled by the absolutely PERFECT one at a pizzeria in my old college town. Haven't managed to find one to match Italian Kitchen's yet...it's going on--eep--23 years now... :(

11. I have two clients with two very different takes on calzones

12. That's just wrong man!

I have celiac disease and have to be on a gluten-free diet.

Calzones are one of the things I miss most! My mouth is watering looking at those pictures.
