It occurs from people thinking God is something other then God is.
Basically many people get kicked around by supernatural things, and because it has power they think it is God. It is a false God. But many think it is God. That does not mean I think the Judeo-Christian God is false, on the contrary I think many people think that is what they are following when they are not.
I would never worship a God that only wants to be worshiped. That is pride, and the idea of no images of God shows me God is not about pride. He could have said only images of him, but instead said no images. When sharing concepts of love, you worship God in your actions since they are pleasing to him in my belief.
But anyways, I been at war with many things people think are gods, but are false.
Some other ideas, I don't worry about things like hell or lakes of fire, because any thing that would send me there is not something I would worship, hence why I think God saves people from that fate.
I do fight against false God's that many think are real. For instance if you were to ask some in power or riches why I have no smokes and beer, they would say it is because God is against me. They actually think that everything that happens is based on God's actions, God gave free will, and most suffering is caused by peoples free will choices. And many of those people make a choice to worship false things for power, or for money, or something else. And they have to show hate to many people in exchange, and with some power they think that hate thing is God.
It is a great topic you post. I do not hate the false Gods regardless if they can or can not show power but they are my enemies, and what people say like that person is probably a misview of what God is.
But here is another thought on it. Nobody knows for sure what the supernatural is. So whatever you believe is a choice.
You can try to go with 'a winner' try and pick the side that you think will have the best outcome for you just for yourself. But you might be wrong who will win, since the supernatural is in part a mystery. So just showing some power is not some reason to follow something.
I figure it is a choice, if something claiming to be God is an asshole I will fight him, with every thought and every effort. And if he was bad, guess what, he would appreciate that :) I find that really funny. Although that would not be the intent, it is funny.
The God I see that is loving and kind I will choose to try and honor with kindness and love, even when I am not perfect. Again a choice.
If I am wrong, it does not matter, because I live as I choose, and would live or die with the free will I was given by the God of goodness and kindness.
But it is a great topic.
Here is a metaphor for it. Think of the world of your youth as a huge MMO farm where people develop different skills and different attributes. Then false Gods try to snatch up people, some are cruel, some deceptive, some like to get them to fight each other, and do not care about people, they are just things owned. If one of those things shows some power and wants you to follow it, fight it, and do not accept. Listen to the tone, if it is not love, is not mercy and kindness, then you don't want to end up on their home computer when they take you from the farm, or try to buy your free will. On there home computer they would do the same unkind uncaring things to you that they trained a person to do to others.
In that metaphor there is a group that breaks into other computers and gets people out. A bunch of sims traveling between computers, in the metaphor, trying to get people away from the asshole false things that falsely claim to be God. In the metaphor those sims are from a big server where the administrators care about them and all people. Although by caring for all people, there is not always smokes and beer for everyone.
What people would be on those servers? People that cared even when the asshole false things tried to get them to be mean.
Its a great metaphor for the supernatural. How you treat other people effects where you end up.
