Thanks to everyone who has posted in my dog thread
Enough of you were wondering, so just so you know, I'll probably get a pound pup. I don't like going into shelters much. I end up wanting to take them all with me, but I only have room for one. But that's likely where the dog will come from if I decide to get one.

1. If I ever get another kitty I am getting her from the pound
Yes, an adult female. Our shelters are so overloaded they are offering free adoptions until august. So sad.

Thanks for rescuing a pup!

3. Thanks for asking!
Oh yeah, I'm a lot better. Just working on getting my apartment cleaned up. (I don't clean when I was drunk, and seeing I was drunk most of the time..)

Anyway, next week I am seeing my shrink and she is going to hook me up with a program. That's the only thing I haven't tried yet..a program..even though at the moment I am hearing aidless and won't be able to hear in group,I am still going. My little brother left me his AA book. My brother beat a nasty ten year addiction to meth,so he knows about the 12 steps.

I have liver disease and I am diabetic..well, that's what the doctor told me at the hospital. So I am following up with that next week as well. I am kind hoping that the diabeties goes away now that I am not drinking and my liver will heal. We'll see!

Be safe!

7. We adopted a fostered rescue dog, our first sight of her was online on Petfinder
Edited on Sat Aug-07-10 12:20 AM by marzipanni
The SPCA nearby doesn't have a place to keep dogs and cats so they take adoptable dogs and cats out of the pound, have them live with foster caretakers, list them on Petfinder, and put them up for adoption on Saturdays at Petco. The foster 'pet parents' bring the dogs and sit in with them in pens in front of the store so you can meet different dogs and ask about the dog's temperament, etc..
I saw the photo and read the description of our Sally (then called Freckles), emailed the local SPCA telling them we wanted to meet her, and we met and adopted Sally at Petco that weekend.
The rescue places in your area may have a similar system for showing their adoptable animals.

This is one part of Petfinder, for dogs who have been overflowing Southern shelters. I looked at a few- Bailey and Corbin caught my eye!

I just saw that Paper Roses gave you the link to the Petfinder version to look at photos and descriptions of adoptable dogs in your area- you can specify gender, breed, size, ~age, to narrow your search-

8. Please do!
There are so many dogs in shelters. Go to the local pound and save one there. Their time is limited and you can save one of these poor innocents that are dumped or picked up off the street. They know and will love you forever.

Consider adopting a pit or pit mix. There are so many that need adopting. When you go to the pound, the majority there will be pits. They are the sweetest, most dedicated dogs and have such a bad rep that no one wants to adopt them. All they need is some love and affection and a good owner instead of the thugs that have made this breed the macho dog du jour.

This is my little girl I'm fostering and the way it looks, she'll be mine because no one's put in an application for her. And I'm fine with that cause I love her although it was my intention to try to foster and save as many as I could. But can't keep them all. There aren't enough adopters for this breed and so many sweet loving dogs are being put down every day because of the media and the few bad owners that have given this breed such a bad name.

And no, from my experience, they're not gassy. :)

Sassy was petrified in a cold dark kennel with no blankets to lay on or any comforts, only a cold cement floor...scared to death when I got her. To see this little girl blossom and be so happy and fearless now, is one of the most rewarding experiences I've had in a very long time.

9. The SPCA is a great place to look
You can call them and tell them what you are looking for and they can usually come up with some great choices. If the dog doesn't work out (let's say it's prone to getting car sick), you can swap it out for one that does. The great part about that is most of SPCA's shelters are no-kill, so if you get a dog that doesn't work out and you have to return it, you aren't condemning it to death as they will find another home for it.

10. You can search for the right dog for you right on-line...
Petfinder has pets from rescue groups and shelters, just fill in the blanks and it will direct you to available dogs, of whatever kind you're looking for, in your area. I don't know if I'd have the heart to go into a shelter, either. I'd want to bring them all home. My pets seem to find me... This should make it easier for you. Hope it helps! And be sure to let us know... :hi:

13. I found our Snowy through petfinder.
She was rescued out of a shelter in Georgia and fostered for quite
some time by a South Carolina rescue group before she came to live with us last December.

Now she lives with us in North Carolina! She's 2-3 years old, female, spayed
and very sweet dog. I'm starting training with her soon with the goal
of having her be certified to visit retirement facilities.

Here she is, with me, when it actually snowed last winter and stayed on the ground long
enough to take pictures. Snowy loved it!

14. Oh, what a beautiful dog!
Sounds like you are both very lucky... She was so fortunate to have found you. O8)

And what a wonderful thing, to bring her to retirement facilities! My grandmother lived in a retirement facility where they had two resident dogs, in Black Mountain, NC. They called the project Noah's Oasis. I spent a lot of time there and actually got quite attached... Both dogs were rescue, too. They spent a lot of time with my grandmother, who loved animals. I made sure that she had biscuits. :D

I adopt my guys from rescue, as well, though they seem to find me. Previously, I've adopted senior animals, feel like those are the ones who need me. I got my little Jack, a pet shop rescue, had a health problem which is now a thing of the past, from a vet tech who used to work for my vet and was fostering him. She knew my other dog, same breed, who found me at age nine when his elderly owner died, so she contacted me about Jack. I adopted him in 2006 at five months. Now I know why I adopt the older ones... Just kidding, he's my sweetheart... :hi:

Jack :loveya:

15. Yes. A rescue is the best. You save their life. And they appreciate it.
On the cats, they don't charge if the cat is over 3 years. Because everyone wants kittens and the older ones need help too.
I don't know if they do that in your area, and with dogs.
It used to be $50 here. Probably more now.
I was going to go to the shelter to look for another cat. One died. And the other is lonely. But a kitten wandered into my office thru a locked gate, but with open spaces. Got onto a shelf and mewed. It took me six hours to find her. But she loves living with us. She found us.
You may give it a few more days, and see if a dog does find you. A stray that walks up and asks you to adopt him.
This has happened to me more than once.
