What's bad is good?
Many years ago on this date, two close friends of mine were horrifically injured in an accident. I remember holding vigil at the hospital with other friends and family, not knowing if they would make it through the night. They did, though, drawing on a tremendous will to live ... and over the long process of recovery, they both went on to accomplish great triumphs in their lives. I don't know that they would have done so without this brush with death.

So I think of some of the traumatic events in my own life, and realize that they've brought me to where I am today, both literally and figuratively. Awful to live through at the time, but ultimately positive. Maybe we can't label events as "good" or "bad" until we have the perspective of several years or even decades that have passed.
