Everyone genuinely seemed to be having fun.

And who knew about River Phoenix's demons? Unlike some in the business, he really kept his underwraps from the public eye. 'Sneakers' was one of his last films.

9. Prince of the City

Sidney Lumet drama on police corruption in NYC, starring Treat Williams.



Rain, drama from the Bahamas, about a young girl coming to live with the mother that abandoned her. The only name actress was CCH Pounder. Pounder is her track coach in the film. Very nicely done.

12. Second Prince of the City and Bagdad Cafe

Prince of the City had to have one of the worst trailers of all time, totally belying the nature of the story. The trailer made it look like some kind of action shoot-em-up, when it's really a terrific character study by, of all people, Treat Williams.

Bagdad Cafe starts off weird, with weird camera angles and dizzying cuts. But it settles down, and turns into a real sweet story with a great heart.

Just for fun, I'll throw in "Volunteers" and "Waking Ned Devine."

24. I was watching a 'Law & Order SVU' rerun the other night

I blurted out to my wife, "The judge! That's Lindsay Crouse from House of Games!" lol It's not that she has been hiding in a cave all these years, but I can't recall anything recent from her, so it was kind of a surprise. I was just glad to see she still gets work.

Joe Mantegna was fantastic in it. Always been a favorite of mine since that film.

This movie seemed "very real" to me in the way the people dealt with the war in their own ways.

Very moving scene when the Grandma went to DC and saw her son's name on the Wall.

33. Mister Lonely

The director is Harmony Korine, director of Gummo and a host of other movies that are just plain messed up, and that many people absolutely hate. And Mister Lonely is nothing like any of them. It's beautifully shot, for one, a departure for Korine, who normally goes out of his way to make a movie look grimy and low budget. Instead, we get a great looking film with an actual story arc, and it's easily his most mature and least self-indulgent film (I like all his stuff, but I can see why others don't).


The story is about a guy eking out a living in Paris as a Michael Jackson impersonator. One day he meets a Marilyn Monroe impersonator, and she tells him that she lives on a small island commune with other celebrity impersonators (Abe Lincoln with Tourette Syndrome for one), and she invites him to live there with them. This is about his time there. There's a scene with the Three Stooges impersonators that is the most surreal moment in film for that year, and you'll know when you get to it. You will never, ever see Larry in the same way again, I promise you.

This is a low key, sad, offbeat gem of a movie, one that even Korine's detractors would appreciate if they watched it with an open mind. It was my favorite movie of the year.

Oh, and it has a side story with Werner Herzog and some flying nuns......

42. The Search for One-eye Jimmy

A very funny, quirky comedy that hardly anyone has heard of. Great cast including Samuel L. Jackson, John Turturro, Steve Buscemi, Anne Meara.
