I use to think Michael Cera was a talented actor but now I think he's just a one-trick pony

I just adored him in Arrested Development but it seems like every movie he does he plays the same hormone-angsts nerdy type kid who usually likes to play a musical instrument. I just watched "Youth in Revolt" (ok I slept thru half of it) and I couldn't figure out how this character differed from his one in "Juno" or "Nick & Nora" or "Superbad" or his upcoming "Scott Pilgrim". It's the same character just different addresses.

BTW if Michael Cera was a woman he'd be Kristen Stewart. I'm so tired of this teenage angst acting, Neve Campbell did the same thing 10 years ago and look where her career is today.

Anthony Michael Hall was typecast pretty much the same way. Once he outgrew teenage rolls he couldn't fit in anywhere.

I think he made a comeback a few years back with a decent TV show but it took awhile until he reached that point.

I agree that he typically plays the same role over and over again, but at least he does that well. Where his career goes in the next few years will really determine whether or not he's a one trick pony. I couldn't stop cracking up at his bad-boy persona in "Youth in Revolt". Every time I saw that goofy mustache, I'd laugh so damned hard.

Because it was essentially Michael Cera playing a typical Michael Cera trying to pretend he's cool.

I didn't buy it one bit.

I loved the George Michael character but his subsequent roles have mostly been variations on that same persona--awkward but likeable nice guy/Beta male.

You can't say that he's the first actor to get pigeonholed into a certain type of character, though. Say, did you ever see that movie with Bruce Willis where he plays the worn-out reluctant hero who rises to the occassion?

And I think that's where some of this stuff takes hold. I mean for awhile Anne Hathaway was always playing the 'Cinderella' type - I mean geez went from ugly duckling to this stunning goddess with both 'The Princess Diary' and 'Devil Wears Prada'. But Prada was a good segue to get her out of the teen Cinderella mode and movies like "Havoc" and "Rachel Getting Married" really took her out of her typical typecast. I think Anne Hathaway, if she avoids crap like "Bride Wars", could be one of the very talented actresses of her generation. She was probably the funniest part of "Valentine's Day" movie.

He totally got past type casting. So much so, that most forget his Doogie Howser days.

He's a young guy. I don't begrudge him making a shit ton of money playing roles that come easy to him.

He's a talented kid and will eventually stretch out.
