It had to happen...
Just saw an ad in a local newspaper here.

"You've seen 'The Passion,' now find out the real story behind the movie."

And a listing of selected churces being advertized.

Ex-squeeze me, but why does a CHURCH need to buy newspaper and TV ads?
 :argh:

1. Yuck!
:puke:

I KNEW they would try to cash in from this thing. The saddest part is that there will most likely be another dozen "God" movies that are made in the next few years.

2. Yup.
And lots more "Endtimes" bullshit films like "Left Behind."

The Life of Brian is being re-released, as I understand it. Cool!

7. Love that movie...
Monty Python religious satire is exactly what this "Passion" crazed country needs right now!

9. I couldn't agree more...
Perhaps I could suggest to some of the churches around here that they sponsor groups to go see it, as they did with 'Passion'. Think they would support that?

5. Maybe the churches could also offer..
...some product tie-ins, such as life-like Passion Action Figures for each tithe.

6. Seems pretty ridiculous, doesn't it?
Hey, at least the churches are using "their own" money to pay for such ads.

Why the hell does the U.S. Postal Service advertise? I mean, taxpayer money pays for ad campaigns to promote stamps and other services. Like I was gonna get my stamps from someone ELSE?

Similarly, what's with the Army and National Guard sponsoring NASCAR teams and such? This seems unnecessary to me also.

8. Lots of churches by ad space in the papers
Check out the NYTimes Sunday copies - at least one page of ads for churches.

Even my hopmetown in WI had ads for churches.

It's a legitimate method for a congregation to get their name in front of people and make announcements.

One of the big churches in Manhattan - Madison Avenue Presbyterian, I think - had a year or two of some very excellent ads on the subway.

I don't see anything wrong with churches advertising.

10. There's a giant Passion of the Christ banner hanging off a Catholic church
by the Kennedy Expressway in Chicago, right around Division Street. Oh, how I'd love to see a "Life of Brian" or "The Last Temptation of Christ" banner there.

The former owner of our condo was a Catholic theologian; we get his Catholic press catalogs sometimes. The latest catalogs are all "Passion" crazy.
