I'm utterly, completely fucked.
Edited on Thu Aug-14-03 10:49 AM by rjbcar27
On Saturday, the hottest day ever recorded in the UK, I participated in a stage rally in south Wales. The ambient air temp averaged around 34deg C and my driver and I, along with all the other 200+ competitors were wrapped safely in 1 piece, 3 layer nomex racesuits and helmets. The car was running very hot all day so we had to have the heater running flat out constantly during the stages. The temp inside the car peaked at just under 50deg C!

I felt fine(ish) on Monday and Tuesday but now I'm totally drained. Why has it taken so long to catch up and does anyone have any advice on how to combat it?

1. Er, is that hot?
I'm sorry, I don't know the changeover to the regular temp. Is that like 100 degrees?

using the standard formula of multiplying by 9/5 and adding 32, you get...122 degrees. otherwise known as 232 degrees Kelvin.

on edit: don't forget to take advantage of your weakened state by drinking and smoking. you've never been so high, so quickly.

yes, at school we'd give blood and then go see how little it took to fuck us up.

5. drink water...
eat fruit...and dare I say it to an englishman...beef.

Get lots of sleep and stay out of the sun.

I don't honestly know these things will help but they can't hurt.

Avoid alcahol.

Oh and please convert those temps to inches? What ever.

Yeah, that's hot.

9. Stay inside, rest, drink A LOT of fluids
I'm with underpants. If you can find Pedialyte, or any other product that restores electrolytes, drink that. Otherwise, drink water or something like Gatorade or Powerade. And for the love of god don't go outside!

Take it from me. I'm from Houston. 38C is normal.

10. yes, second the pedialyte
In the future, it is very important to avoid these situations if you possibly can by drinking enough fluid during the exposure to the heat. Once you have experienced one episode of heat stroke, you are often more sensitive in the future to further episodes. Don't drink alcohol until you are completely recovered. It is dehydrating. If you are experiencing serious problems like severe unexplained headache or hallucinations, you need to get to an emergency room right away, but you probably already know that. With minor symptoms, rest, drink fluid every waking hour, stay in a cool place out of direct sunlight would be my advice.

12. Thanks everyone!
We had a great result, 6th overall and 2nd in class but it was extremely demanding. Both of us downed gallons of water during the day and didn't have any alcohol until a day after, but it's hit us both very, very hard.

Gatorade is unavailable here but I think Powerade might be.

Thanks all. You guys rock.

17. A cupful of pickle juice can help
Edited on Thu Aug-14-03 11:03 AM by Best_man23
You cope with extreme heat. Also, water, water, water. Drink it until you can't drink it anymore, then drink some more.

Also, the temps inside that car are much higher than the outside temps, with the engine and exhaust, probably more like 60-70 degrees celsius.

LOAD UP. Drink all you can get down until you are peeing very pale to clear urine. Then keep right on drinking (Gatorade and water). Prevention is the best cure.

I'm in Florida. Believe it or not, it does not get that hot in Florida (lower 90s) but it gets plenty humid. If I have outside work in the yard, I can go through a gallon of water without ever having to pee. You can get dehydrated pretty fast and dehydration makes you feel really lousy.

Edit: Rest and try to stay cool. You'll soon bounce back.

18. On a tangentially related note...
...have you seen the new Rally Racing game for the XBOX? I saw a couple guys on TV (I think they were drivers themselves) trying it out, and it looked fun as hell. The fella who is the co-driver was there, too. His name flew right past me as I was typing this. But it's the Colin MacRae game. I might need to get a copy!
