Cliff Nobles & Co. - The Horse

Clifford James Nobles<2> was born in Grove Hill, Alabama, Nobles grew up in Mobile, Alabama,<3> and began singing in high school as a member of a local group, The Delroys. He moved to Philadelphia and recorded three singles for Atlantic Records, none of which charted. While living in a commune in Norristown, Pennsylvania, he formed a group, Cliff Nobles & Co., with bassist Benny Williams, guitarist Bobby Tucker, and drummer Tommy Soul. They recorded demos and, with the help of songwriter/record producer Jesse James, landed a recording contract with Phil-L.A. of Soul Records. Their second release for the record label was the single "Love Is All Right" b/w "The Horse", which featured the horn section from what would later be known as MFSB. "The Horse" was simply an instrumental version of the A-side, and Nobles, who was the lead singer, does not actually play on the track at all. Nevertheless, it caught fire at radio stations and became a hit, peaking at #2 for three weeks on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1968, as well as #2 on the Black Singles chart.<4> It was held out of the #1 spot by Hugh Masekela's "Grazin' in the Grass", on the week of 29 July 1968 - resulting in the extremely rare occurrence of instrumentals occupying both the #1 and #2 slots of the pop charts in the same week.<5> "The Horse" sold a million copies within three months of release, with the gold disc award from the R.I.A.A. made in August 1968.<3>
Nobles' record label continued releasing instrumental singles on which Nobles himself did not play a note, though a later single on which Nobles actually sang narrowly missed the R&B Top 40. An album credited to Cliff Nobles & Co., entitled The Horse, was released consisting mostly of instrumentals, and hit #159 on the Billboard Hot 200 album chart.<6> After his music career was over, Nobles worked in construction and later in the electricity generation industry.<2>
The material Nobles recorded for Atlantic has yet to see re-release.
Nobles died in Norristown, Pennsylvania in October 2008, at the age of 67.<1>

"Take Five" is a jazz piece written by Paul Desmond and performed by The Dave Brubeck Quartet on their 1959 album Time Out. Recorded at Columbia's 30th Street Studios in New York City on June 25, July 1, and August 18, 1959,<1> this piece became one of the group's best-known records, famous for its distinctive, catchy saxophone melody and use of the unusual quintuple (5/4) time, from which its name is derived.<2> While "Take Five" was not the first jazz composition to use this meter, it was one of the first in the United States to achieve mainstream significance, reaching number five on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Singles chart.
"Take Five" was re-recorded and performed live multiple times by The Dave Brubeck Quartet throughout the group's career. In addition, there have been various covers of the piece, including one by Swedish singer Monica Zetterlund in 1962 and a dub version by King Tubby, released posthumously in 2002. Some versions also feature lyrics, including a 1961 recording with lyrics written by Dave Brubeck and his wife Iola, sung by Carmen McRae. Al Jarreau performed an unusual and outstanding Scat version of the song in Germany in 1976. "Take Five" has also been included in countless movies and television soundtracks, and still receives significant radio play.
Upon his death in 1977, Desmond left the rights to royalties for performances and compositions, including "Take Five", to the American Red Cross, which has since received combined royalties of approximately $100,000 per year.<3>

Vince lived up the hill from me through the sixties. I often could hear him practice on warm days when his windows were open. The electric harpsichord sound carried all the way down the hill to the bay and beyond, the piano not so far.

"Cast Your Fate to the Wind" takes me places I'd like to visit again.

One album/cd that I'm guessing doesn't qualify (because some songs include chants) is "Sacred Spirit: Chants & Dances of Native Americans". It's largely (but not exclusively) instrumental, but it immediately came to mind.

Gotta agree with Brubeck's "Take 5" but local stations over-played (NPR and KJZZ) for a while and I heard it so often I needed a break. Such a song doesn't deserve that - I'm definitely ready to hear it again now! : )

The sound of Link's guitar is the shizz. He is a huge musical influence on me as well as countless other guitarists.
