I come humbly seeking advice on administering medicine to a cat.
Liquid medicine. 2 CCs.
We have 12 more to give her and I am not sure I will live through it.
She weighs 8 pounds, but I believe her fighting weight is 180.
I will pick up messages tomorrow as I am weak from loss of blood and must rest.
Humbly,
Rurallib.

1. Liquids are very hard.
Edited on Sun Aug-15-10 09:23 PM by hippywife
It takes two people, ideally. One to cradle the cat with a towel or blanket around its body so its legs are coccooned, immobilized along with its claws, and the other to administer the meds. Hope you have someone who can help you. :hi:

2. That is what we have been doing
do cats grow extra legs at a time like that?
I really didn't think it would be this hard. And if we do get it in she goes into a barfing routine.

3. IMHO, liquids are the easy way
Edited on Sun Aug-15-10 09:34 PM by Sanity Claws
Wrap the cat up in a towel (kittie burrito), cradle it in your arms like a baby, stick the dropper in through the side of the mouth (fits easily through the side teeth) and squirt.

The cat will make horrible faces but it gets done. You then give the cat a treat. I always gave him some canned food.

I think liquids are easy. Pills are hard. My cat seemed to have learned to hold the pill in his mouth and spit it out later. no joke. I kept finding the pill on the floor later.

5. I literally have to hang my purrito'd cat upside down and drop the pill in on the
far back side of the tongue or the same thing happens to me. The little goobers.

10. I had to give meds to my Max last year
What I did was grab him by the scruff of the neck with my nondominant (left) hand, and then squirt the eyedropper full of his meds down his throat. Afterwards, I gave him some yummy treats, such as tuna or his favorite cat treats, because I knew the medicine was bitter.

4. Go buy a few cans of wet cat food.
Before putting any new food down, take a spoonful of the wet food and inject the meds into the scoop of food. Make sure she finishes.

6. Though mine wasn't TOO bad, she WAS stubborn...

Relatively speaking, of course.

7. I never had a problem with the kitty burrito...
you have to get all four legs tucked in there, though, or it won't work. And, kinda lying on top of the package helps a lot.

Once you get him wrapped and ready, squeezing at the back of the mouth (the vet should have shown you how) open the mouth so you can get in the shot of whatever it is he's taking.

BTW, one reason cats hate that shit so much is that the vet meds are repackaged kiddie meds, so instead of tuna flavored drops you're giving him nasty orange or (gasp!) pineapple flavored stuff.

8. My wife and daughter volunteered at a huge animal rescue ranch.
They give cats medicine by mixing it in baby food and spoon feeding the kitty with a rubber tipped baby spoon. It worked there an at home. For some reason cats love baby food!!

9. flvegan's suggestion is very good.
If you choose baby food, make sure it does NOT have any onion or other flavoring; go for all meat, or just meat and vegetables, nothing else.

And if you do the kitty burrito thing (which I do; and yes, my cat Silver hides at least 16 other legs with very sharp claws somewhere for just such occasions), ***DO NOT*** flip the cat over like a baby; this will make it much easier for the cat to aspirate the liquid. Very bad.

Instead, I wrap said kitty up and sort of tuck her back in the nook of my elbow, leaning over her a bit to hold her down, and then insert the meds from a side angle.

11. I found mixing the liquid in with juice from a Tuna Can was the only thing that worked for me
and of course if you have 2 cats you know that you'll need to put out Tuna Juice for the other one, else he'll end up with more medication than the one that actually needs it.

After 3 doses I gave up. She's continued to live 3 years after that trauma.

12. One of my poor kitties has hyperthyroid disease
and when she was first diagnosed we used the ear cream because pilling her was horrible. That has since stopped working and I had to resort back to pills. I know they aren't exactly the same as liquid but I can get her to take them quite nicely now.

First I have to insist she come and let me pet her and once we've done that I talk to her which makes her want to look at me. While on my lap and looking at me I gently but quickly open her mouth, with my left thumb at the corner of her mouth, which forces it open a bit and then I toss the pill in her mouth aiming for the back of her throat, rubbing her chin and neck until she swallows it. I don't know if this will work for you or not but I'm wishing you the best since I know how hard this can be.

Oh and neither of my cats will allow me near them if I act nervous or chase them, I have to lure them.

13. Also, if you blow gently in the cat's face
as you administer the liquid to your purrito, the cat will instinctively swallow. Learned that when I did a stint as a vet tech for a few months!
