Spanish for Politicians

I live in a county that is looking at hiring a Spanish interpreter for the first time due to increasing use of migrant workers.

As a to-be elected official, and someone who learns computer languages rather easily (I know, different beast), I want to learn Spanish using my computer and other aides on my own and within months.

How do I do it?

I can read some, usually enough to get the basic idea, and can even infer the meaning on Telemundo while closing my eyes (no context). But I couldn't form a senence if my life depended on it.

1. Pimsleur audio courses

These courses are very highly regarded and have helped me with French. They are expensive, but you can find them on eBay. You can do the lessons in your car, without a book. The old Foreign Service Institute language courses are good too, but old-fashioned and more structured. They are good for intensive drilling of grammar and verb forms. I don't think there is one brand of program that will teach you a language comprehensively; different styles complement each other.
