Name a soy-free vegan margarine that doesn't suck

I have a young female friend who has been declared allergic to beef, cow's milk, goat's milk, sheep's milk, soybeans, wheat and corn. Is there a margarine that (1) contains none of those ingredients and (2) does not taste like Crisco?

1. I believe that Fleischmann's Light is vegan and soy free.

Be sure to check the label though. This is the only "margarine" outside of the UK that I believe contains neither.

You could also talk to her allergist. Some of the soy "products" don't trigger a good number of folks. I've heard that soybean oil and soy lecithin may not be triggers for many folks.

Otherwise, there's always Pure (it's a brand). Problem is that it's only sold in the UK.

You *could* try finding that super pure olive oil and putting that in the fridge. It "solidifies" like butter. At least I've heard.

Yeah, this is a tough one.

I can't drink soymilk, it really messes up my guts, but I can do soybean oil.

9. I have talked to the allergist

She's been a vegetarian for 20-some years, and somehow she became allergic to every common vegetarian/vegan source of protein there is. Also grains...she can eat rice, barley, malt and hops but no wheat, corn or soy. IOW, bread is off limits but Budweiser is fine.

We've been told, "stay on this for six months and we'll reevaluate you then." Hopefully we won't be looking at a list this long then. The olive oil might be an idea; it's on the "safe" list.

12. Protein....look into hemp.

It is a *bit* more expensive, but it's really good if not on the list.

There are two REALLY good natural food stores up here: Pilgrim's in Coeur d'Alene and Huckleberries in Spokane. We weren't specifically looking for hemp when we went into Pilgrim's (they may have it, though I'm not confident--this IS Idaho, after all) and Huckleberries probably does but we haven't been there yet.

5. you pretty much already have a problem

with the "margarine that doesn't suck" part - I don't think that exists no matter how it is manufactured.

If I was to try to eat that way I would choose really good bread and dip it in really good olive oil

not sure if that is what you are wanting it for...for baking there are other substitutes

8. that is quite a lot of allergies

are they legit? I see a lot of people claiming they are allergic to various things and often it is more of a sensitivity or just a NORMAL reaction

a little indigestion or one sneeze does not = allergy

not implying anything personal, just that I have seen that more often than a large number of actual food allergies combined in one person - has the smell of alternative "medicine" to me.

10. She's been tested by a doctor

This isn't some sort of Alternative Medicine doctor, unless those guys have MD degrees now.

What we do know: the first stage--before the test came back--was to cut out soy, wheat and a couple other things. She did this and felt very much better--pain reduced, joints not as puffy, swelling around the midsection has gone down and her face isn't flushed all the time like it was. She got this mongo list yesterday. It hasn't been long enough to know whether all that restriction is going to help, but we're hopeful.

didn't mean to question your credibility or anything, just sounded so extreme. Obviously it IS pretty extreme, then. Glad she is under the care of a MD, hope something can be worked out so she can have a decently satisfying diet while staying safe/comfortable.

Don't elimination diets usually only work with one ingredient at a time? Or is that just for babies?
