Am I a good employee or a stupid fool?

Today was supposed to be the start of my vacation.

Problem? Work didn't have the staff to cover my off-time. My manager told me to have a good time and that he'd see me next week. I asked him if we had the coverage. He hesitated and then told me no, we didn't.

I told him fine, I'll work until we can figure something out.


Am I a good employee or am I just stupid?

I think you put yourself in the manager's shoes for a moment, figured out that his situation would be difficult, and then stepped up to the plate to do what you could.

I just HOPE you work for a company that will remember this the next time there are means to increase your paycheck!

9. You are but your employer is not

I learned a long time ago that once you do something as a favor, it then becomes expected. Unless there is some kind of reciprocation (like money or extra time off) workplace favors are only one-sided. By putting your own need for time off second, you've set a precedent where your boss will feel free to expect you to do the same the next time.

You are a good person and a good employee. I hope your employer truly appreciates you.

10. My boss does appreciate me...

The company? Maybe not, but my manager certainly does. I'm a 3rd shifter and there has been many times that he's come in to help out, even though it means a 16 hour or more day for him.

12. Sadly, I agree that you get taken advantage of for caring too much.

If the manager is not willing to do something reciprocal to compensate for this, he may not have the authority to do that. And I hope he has the authority to give raises when it is evaluation time, because you deserve it.

I used to be like this, worrying more about my employer than about me. You learn that they really worry about themselves in the end.

you may not get a reward in the current job, but I believe, over time, doing good and being honest pays off.

13. Nice of you. If you didn't have any set plans for your vacation it is great that you could help out

your boss. But just make sure you do get your time off when the weather is nice and you can really enjoy it.
