I just spoke with him yesterday. What a shame. He was my best man. Twice.

Rest in Peace, Tex! Your friend, LeeRoy!

1. Any idea why?
It's happened once or twice to us. They never give you the slightest warning, do they?

Our sympathies--we know, we've been where you are. All you want to do is slap some sense into
them to get them to talk to you, and it's too late, and you can't do a goddam thing about it.

19. No. But it is the thought that runs through our minds.
I want to reach back through the phone lines to the morning before he died and just do whatever I can to get through to him that he does mean something to this world. I can't, though.

He was very depressed and was never able to get or would never allow anyone to him help.

Sad.

2. I'm sorry
That must be so painful.

My condolences, although that's probably little comfort now.

Peace in your time of grief. Peace to the family also, these things are so hard to fathom. RIP.

I have no other words, I don't know anyone who has committed suicide; just can't even fathom what you and his family must be feeling.

11. Oh, mad. How awful. It's just so damn hard when a friend--especially a best friend--
won't/can't let somebody else know how much pain they have. Just so hard.

I'm so sorry.

20. None of my friends have had that privilege
Some have died prematurely.

Some have died violent deaths through accident.

Some have died violent deaths rescuing loved ones.

And some with terminal illnesses have died begging for a gun to put them out of their misery.

I suppose some of the premature deaths were caused by self-destructive behavior. Suicide by other means, I suppose.

But I've never had a friend choose to end his life for no reason other than to be done with life.

My sons have.

That has mystified me.

It still does today.

21. It has mystified me too. But it does not correspond to any of the manners
of death that you mentioned. (Darwin awards do not count!).

He had just turned 49 and was two months younger than I am.

22. I sometimes suspect that intelligence is not the evolutionary advantage we think it is
It scares me to think that, perhaps, they have uncovered a truth that in our blissful ignorance eludes us.

25. It's not a stupid post reply to my OP.
I did not include applicable information in my post that would indicate he was 49.

I will celebrate the life the lived and the family left behind. I will not honor the "choice". It was not a "choice" that he made. It was an illness, that forced him into the "choice" to end his life.
