When I was in the Navy and visited places like Hong Kong and Sydney, Australia, I would always get plastered and find my way to a karaoke bar where I would belt out in a horrible voice songs like Soft Cells' "Tainted Love."

Remember the old jukeboxes? They all had the anniversary song (or maybe it was anniverary waltz?), and it was horrible. As a practical joke, we often used to plug a buck or two into the machines (back when you got 7 songs for a buck) and use every song option to play the anniversary song/waltz as were leaving the bar.

62. When I'm asked to sing karaoke in Japan

I blow them all away by asking for "Namida no Sanbashi" ("Wharf of Tears") a big hit for Masako Mori in 1978 and again for Nobue Matsuzaka in the mid 1980s.

It's an enka (the sociological equivalent of country western music in Japan), so they always ask if I'm really sure about singing that one. But it was on the radio all the time when I was a student, and the accompaniment is easy to follow, so it's my favorite.

If I could find another woman who was of the appropriate age in 1977-78, I'd pair up with her to sing some of Pink Lady's greatest hits.
