I just ate pork by accident.

I didn't check the ingredients in the vodka sauce my dad bought and after I was done eating it with pasta, I saw that it had bacon in it. It was in really tiny little bits, and I couldn't tell.

Ugh. I know it was an honest mistake, but I still feel bad. :(

So on both counts, I say it's okay to forgive yourself. Drek happens sometimes, but ye shall be judged for long-term actions and intentions, not a few bumps in the road.

I was at a Mexican restaurant once with a guy I was really trying to impress, and stuffed a forkful of what I thought was cheese enchilada into my gob--only to find out it was loaded with ground beef. I must've turned 6 shades of green but managed to "remove" it without being disgusting. I realized then I couldn't control everything. A bit of flesh might infiltrate, but the only way you can prevent that is by living in a bubble and never eating food prepared by anyone else.

It's different than deciding to eat meat after a long time not doing it. I wouldn't even consider that--but I have friends who've done that and they suffered the worst indigestion of their lives!

call it the flesh of the unknown animal. No joke - a few years ago I was in Israel with my mom. At the breakfast buffet the first morning we were somewhat shocked to see bacon and ham being offered on the "meat" section of what claimed to be a kosher meal. Now, we're not Jewish and we are both carnivores, but still it was a bit weird. Our waiter was named Lev. In talking to him, he explained he was a secular Israeli Jew, although he did wear a yarmulke. We asked him about it, basically going, 'uh Lev, is that really, um, you know, ham, on the breakfast buffet?'. Lev just smiled and said, yes, it certainly was the flesh of the unknown animal and some Israelis really liked it.

It was an accident so don't be too hard on yourself. Forgive yourself.

A Priest and a Rabbi are having their weekly lunch together. The Priest says, "we've known each other a long time. May I ask you a personal question?"

"Of course," replies the Rabbi.

"Have you ever tried ham?". "Yes I have, just once. When I was young, out behind the synagogue on a dare from my classmates. Since we're getting so personal, let me ask you something, Father. Have you ever been with a woman?"

The Priest shifts uncomfortably in his chair, and finally replies, "Yes, once following a party that got out of hand shortly before I started seminary."

The two of them sit there in embarrassed silence for a minute.

Finally, the Rabbi looks up at the Priest and says, "Beats hell out of eating ham, doesn't it?"
