2. It's cultural. It Britain, when someone asks your name, they mean your surname.
(At least they used to; maybe they have changed with the times)

Anyway, JB offers his surname: "Bond", then goes on to specify with his given name plus his surname: "James Bond".

Simple.

4. Back when he was a novice spy he thought he was teh shit, so he developed
this really pretentious affectation of only introducing himself by his last name. Of course, he was a total nobody, so everybody just said "Bond who? WTF?" and he had to clarify. Now that he's a bigshot, he's retained the nervous habit of clarifying his full name, but it tears him up inside every time he does it...

5. Thanks! I didn't know that!
Your explanation gives me a deeper and more sympathetic understanding of Bond, James Bond.

13. I thought it was because of the woman in Dr No.
In the opening he's playing cards and is talking to her.

James Bond: I admire your courage, Miss...?
Sylvia Trench: Trench. Sylvia Trench. I admire your luck, Mr...?
James Bond: Bond. James Bond

I don't know if that's the way the upper crust addressed themselves or whether he was just being playful about her name.

15. Damn literalist. Yes, he was flirting. And doing it well. And the coolness stuck.
But that's pretty darned literal and factual for a Lounge thread. We're more into randomness here.

After a while, your mind gets random and slows down. "What's your name?" "Bond." Now he has to think a moment, remember where he is, so he lights a cigarette to stall, then remembers, "James Bond."

Back when he used to fire on all cylinders, he called himself The Bondz. They stole that from him for "Happy Days." True fact.

18. Monosylabic name
If you just say "James bond" folks might hear "Jamesbond". If you just say "Bond", they don't know if it is your first or last name. Similarly with James, it could be Mr. James as much as a first name.

Of course the formal way would be to say "Mr. Bond". But he's trying to be inappropriately familiar.

23. It's a tell. His name isn't really James Bond. And like a nervous fool, he gives
that fact away, by repeating his name to remind himself what it is
