I purchased some brown sugar to make cookies for the kids...now this is not the first time i've had this problem...whenever i buy a box of brown sugar it comes out of the box like a brick. is this normal? am i supposed to use a cheese grater? whats the buzz on this?

put the brown sugar in a container with a chunk of apple. The moisture from the apple will soften the sugar.
Lately I have been purchasing the brown sugar in the plastic bags instead of the box, it doesn't seem to get hard as fast.
