. . . . The really short one was my last and absolute FAVORITE cat ever, NoName. I had bought her a harness so we could go on walks together (she was a tuxedo cat and took RIGHT to the leash -- we had the BEST walks). I put it on her in the morning and left it on her when I went to work so she could get used to it. . When I came home that night, I realized that she hadn't made an appearance (usually greeted me at face level in my entranceway). I went looking for her, calling her name and rattling her food bag and got absolutely no response. I started to fear that she had slipped outside (TOTAL indoor cat -- and this is the Arizona desert). . JUST before I went for an outdoor search, I looked again under the kitchen nook and found her there behind a box. That poor kitty had slipped one of her legs INSIDE the harness trying to get it off and couldn't bring her leg back out. No telling how long the poor li'l thing had been like that. . I truly think she was embarrassed to have me see her after such a bonehead move. Hence, the silence. . She got PLENTY of attention and noms that night, believe me. . . . . . The other was Pennsylvania, where I had two cats (the only other cats I've ever named -- Blackcat and Greycat... JUST so others would know which one I might be talking about). . I got home from grocery shopping and got everything put away and fixed a quick meal and started to watch a movie. I was halfway through the movie when I realized that Greycat hasn't put in an appearance. I searched my place thoroughly. Nothing. . Time to search outdoors (I figured she slipped out when I was taking groceries in). I took a tip from Steve Martin in "Roxanne" and took a coupla cans of tuna and a can opener with me -- my place was SURROUNDED by deep woods and I could see a long ordeal in front of me. . It was a very grey, very chilly, VERY drizzly Spring day. Just outside the front door were two big waist-high shrubs. I stop in between them and puncture the first can of tuna with the opener to get ready... and I hear this very faint, almost reluctant "mew" from the bush to my left. I spread some branches and sure enough -- there was Greycat!!!! . Joy!!!! . Then a LOT of laughter... the first time in YEARS she got a chance to go explore the big big wonderful outdoor world -- and like a five-year-old child "running away from home", got no further than 10 feet. . . . She got a lot of attention and noms THAT night, too. . What a traumatic, ultimately EMBARRASSING experience for her. . . . The big BABY!!!!!   . . .
