out driving around checking fences and such I came across FOUR sets of dove hunters (one with 2 cool looking dogs - weimeraners?) and two young men bow hunting for deer

plus the quintessential sign of fall in SE Arizona: the very large, colorful and commonly called (somewhat non-PC)

Mexican Generals

disclaimer: pic stolen from the intertubes, it was too hot to mess with getting down and taking close ups - they are going to be all over the damn place in a few more weeks

12. My youngest kitty hunts crickets
he used to go outside and track them down and bring them to me. Those were the only crickets in the house.

7. no it's a huge grasshopper
and under the green wings it is a flaming pink-orange color so when they jump up and "fly" you get this wild flash of color

not much eats them although I have seen big praying mantises catch and consume them. But when they get smashed on the roads, they cannibalize - you will see big piles of them - one gets run over, then 3 or 4 will come eat the body, then they will get run over, etc etc

they seem big enough to hurt you tires too:P

there is another grasshopper that is truly psychedelic and they are the only thigs besides deer that I have seen eat pot plants I mean so I have been told:o

these a re little bit smaller - more in the "normal" range for grasshoppers

6. That is one cool lookin bug!
Around the DC/MD area we have sprickets. They look like half spider, half grasshopper, and they're here all summer, but they get huge in the fall, and they start hiding under the trash cans, the recycle bins, the welcome mat, and jump out at you when you least expect it. I don't mind grasshoppers or crickets but I hate spiders so it's kind of freaky. Still, it means that fall is near - Woo Hoo!!

Enjoy your Generals!!

Edited on Fri Sep-03-10 07:39 PM by Kali
wonder what they are?

I could probably gather these things up and sell them as novelty pets, they are so big and slow.

edit - oh there they are right on the google! so they are just some kind of long legged crickets

11. Yeah, that's them critters!
I've always known em as sprickets. I'm sure they have a scientific-Latin-important name, but the cutesy-popular name is "spricket".

Silly things, but hardy. Even after the snow starts falling, you'll go out to take the trash to the curb, and the odd one will pop out. Really startles you. But again, those long legs, that scuttling walk, those jumps -- yeesh.

I'll take your psychedelic Generals over our dirt-ugly sprickets any day. :)
