I'm going with Bruce Campbell as Roland.

1. That's a tough one...
Remember, nobody ages but Roland and he ages something like 60 years over the span of the books. I think you need an actor younger than Bruce, though I love Bruce.

3. Also, I wonder if they'll get Stephen King to play himself.
I don't know if he can act and he's a major character towards the end. That's almost as interesting to me, who plays Stephen King?

7. I edited the thread title. Hadn't thought about that.
Just ignore anything you've read so far. Everyone makes jokes about the books. :)

4. Toughie
Hmmm. Young but gritty......Can I say who I would NOT cast? Robert Pattinson absolutely NOT!!!:)
More seriously, Bruce Boxleitner keeps popping into my head.

6. Maybe...
possibly a bit swarthier though. Think he'd die his hair black for the part?

11. Maybe.
He definitely could have the grizzled unshaven look that I think Roland sports.

16. That's amazing. IMDB has 96 entries for him.
And as nearly as I can tell, I've never seen a one of them.

8. Woodard is a good choice. i think I visualized her when I read it, anyway.
Owen is good, too, but not my top pick. Not gritty enough, maybe? I don't know.

Have to think about Brody. He's not at all what I pictured. :)

9. Not gritty?
I thought his role in Children of Men was about as gritty as leading men get.

15. Yeah, but it was British gritty, not Old West gritty.
That's like, you know, a gritty window treatment.

I like Owen. He was great in Children of Men, Croupier, The Internationalist. But even in Children of Men, the scenes and directing (especially the directing) were gritty, but he was still polished, and insecure or hesitant for much of it. Even when his former revolutionary nature kicked in, he never walked around with the absolute certainty of Roland. Roland was so certain of himself that he was willing to sacrifice his closest loved ones with barely a flicker of uncertainty. Owen can do that, but I don't know how well.

Maybe now that Daniel Craig is unemployed, they could ask him. That's what he did in Bond.

10. Okay, having thought this out a bit.
I'd want a newcomer (someone who comes to the audience as a new face, no baggage) with some serious acting chops for Roland who has to play from ~15 to late-60s. I think French actor Romain Duris would be great for the part. (These pictures were taken approximately the same time, within a few months)

I'll do the rest of the cast as I can think of it. I'd love to see James Cromwell play Father Callahan as he played the exact same part in the 2004 TV movie Salem's Lot.

12. Roland Deschain...what a great character
With Ron Howard directing, this could be amazing; with Goldsman as co director, it could turn to SHIT immediately

Older Roland - Hugh Jackman (for the older Roland)
Young Roland - Leo DiCaprio, hands down

Susanna/Odetta/Detta - could Angela Bassett still pull this off?

Eddie - this would have been PERFECT for Heath Ledger...such a shame...could Johnny Depp pull this off?

Jake - some young looking teen who is georgous..he stays young throughout

What would play Oy? Because Oy is instrumental in the books.

18. I think Russell Crowe might be a good Roland.
Billy Zane, Gene Hackmann, and Val Kilmer as incarnations of Randall Flagg maybe.

Eddie, Jake, Alain and Susannah are tough ones.

Tommy Lee Jones as Cort for sure.

Yes, I have repaired three myself, and sold it for over $300 per. I'm going to go back to Dark Tower hunting in October.

31. Isn't Flagg considered to be Walter in the Dark Tower Series?
I seem to recall that Flagg was come across by Thomas and Dennis in Stephen Kings "The Eyes of the Dragon" fleeing from who-knows-what....when they were crossing some kind of portal, perhaps...it's been years since I read this series, so forgive me if I am totally wrong with this

30. I can see Jake in Liam Kade...Jake needs to be a more hardened youth
his mother abuses pills, and the kid himself is sensitive but hardened in a good way

The kid is also more experienced in the way of the world than most adults are...way, way beyond his years ( like the books ) there is something in his eyes that speaks experience of what a cruel world this can be, but he accepts it and just deals

I'm looking for other candidates at this moment, including candidates for Eddie and Susan

33. My son and I have discussed this.
Long tall pistol packing preacher with haunting steely blue eyes and a chiseled jawline? That conjures images of Nicholas Cage, maybe Jake Gyllenhaal for the younger scenes.

Jada Pinket Smith or Halle Berry would both do well I think with the complications personified in Susannah.

Eddie Dean...I'd have to knock that around a bit. I wonder if Justin Timberlake is too tall and perhaps too aged now as well. Emile Hirsch strikes me as the workable option after taking a quick peek at some list of Hollywood's hottest under 25.

Now, if I could stop time and go back and pick a cast based on how they used to look? Roland and Eddie would have to be Clint Eastwood and Steve Buscemi.

The real question for me is who's gonna provide the voice for Blaine the pain, and that nasty little tin can from the Callah book.

35. Emile Hirsch could be the younger Roland, too, for most of the older Rolands mentioned.
Or Eddie. That's a good pick.
