She is such a character! We are really enjoying her. The Pembrokes still have not "accepted" her and wish we would send her back! They are so staid and dignified and she is a wild child. They are just the best dogs.

13. I love all kinds of dogs..but..
we've had Great Pyrenees for many years. White floof with some pale markings sometimes, and black eyes, eyeliner, lips and noses. Polar bears with dog heads.
They're big, gentle, sweet natured and lazy. The lazy is particularly nice, since I don't think I could manage dogs their size if they had terrier energy. They do excellent rug impersonations. They are also very gentle with our seven cats.
I am no good at posting pictures, but you can always google Great Pyrenees images.

15. The family farm in Iowa
kept a couple Great Pyrenees to watch over the alpacas. They did a good job, unfortunately one of the girls passed away this last spring, leaving her litter mate alone. Still, the old girl does a good job protecting her "herd". Wonderful dogs, I love em dearly, such sweet dispositions with their people, but protective and caring.

If I had a choice of purebreds - and I would go for a mixed breed in a shelter over anything - but if I had a choice, it would be Lab, Great Pyrenees, Newfoundland, Flat-Coated Retriever. Love em all.

31. If I were going to get another dog I would look for one lilke that
My last dog was built similar to your girl, but with an all over blue merle color - medium grey with black spots. Mom-in-law said he looked like a hyena, but he was the smartest dog I ever owned.

He found us - he was eating road kill off the highway and we had to stop so we didn't run over him. He was about three months old then. We had him nearly twenty years. When we put him to sleep he had a tumor on his hip, cataracts, three teeth, and was senile. He got so he could not recognize us and he would get lost. He no longer enjoyed life and it hurt to see a dog that had been so joyful all his life (even when living off road kill) be unhappy. So we let him go, the same day we put two of our old lady broodmares and one of our client's horses to sleep. They are all buried together in the bottom pasture.

34. Our last dog, Billie Girl, was blue merle with the one big black spot on her back and a watch eye
We always thought her as mostly heeler, but my BIL, raised in Texas, said with authority, "King ranch" dog. Just another fine dog I miss.

Putting down family is never fun, and I've had to do it more times than I care think about, but never three family members in one day. That would just crush me.

There are lots of dogs rescue outfits that focus on working dog breeds. They are particular in placing the dogs, as the do have special needs, but it sounds like you can provide the environment they need. Personally, I subscribe to the theory that the special dog will find you when the time is right, but you already know that.

39. I had a chance to adopt a puppy not long after Dan The Dog died
Our vet had someone give him a litter of puppies that looked just like Dan. But hubby and I had talked about it and decided not to get another dog. We simply were no longer spending as much time outside, had just leased the farm facilities to someone else, and did not want to have to keep a dog fastened up most of the time.

Our former neighbors had developed their farms so the area is no longer as rural as it used to be. We have enough problems with the suburbanites that moved in letting their untrained dogs run free that we did not want a dog of ours getting on their properties.

It was a good decision - shortly after my back gave out, a couple of years later so did my left knee. Other body parts have continued to deteriorate so now I am only semi-mobile. I have trouble keeping up with one indoor/outdoor semi-feral cat. A dog would be neglected, I am sorry to say.

I'm at the point where I'm wondering if getting another (once this one ages out) is a good idea. We had planned on getting two young cats at the same time. I'll see how things are going by then - it should be another ten years or more and I am not sure how capable I will be by then. Maybe the shelter will have two older cats that already get along we can adopt.

55. Her body could pass for a McNab Border Collie but not her skull
She is light on her feet, like the Border Collie, but she has a heavy boned wide head like a heeler. Our neighbor, a large animal vet who encounters a lot of working dogs and has a fine Border Collie himself, confirms our belief.

71. How.....
do you stop them from chewing and eating everything???? I have a black lab pup - she's 6 months old - who always seems to be hungry. She's just now tall enough to reach the kitchen counter and will eat whatever she can find that happens to be up there. She's chewed shoes, the couch, all kinds of stuff even though she has toys and chew thingies. She's a wonderful girl and listens but I can't leave her alone!

75. You don't
Ok, you can stop them from chewing the furniture (bitter apple is a great product) but you don't stop labs from eating everything in sight. (Seriously, google "my lab ate" (use the quotes) - there are "About 58,200 results".) They are notorious for eating everything.

But give her time - they also love to please so if you catch her eating something, tell her no. She probably won't eat that again. (Of course, you'll have to do that with everything in your house... ) Seriously, though, she'll learn.

And they don't seem to want to outgrow it. Rocks, dirt, tree bark, roadkill (especially yummy), bars of soap, poison ivy, a bottle of Advil, ball point pens, bananna peels... oh the joys of dog barfing soap bubbles for days and trying to explain why your dog's teeth are blue. Yet, finicky about their dog food... go figure.

Had me laughing at "the joys of" especially having been there myself so many times.

My new pup (a mix) had to fend for herself for her first 5 months and as a result eats anything that's not nailed down (slugs (as in snails), hair-ties, worms, compost). Except, it seems, she does not like Artemis canned dog food. :wow: We just figured that out thinking it was her kibble she didn't like. Sorry Artemis, apparently slugs taste better than your dog food.

24. Northern working breeds and their mixes.
Purebreds often have health problems because of inbreeding and we do not do anything to encourage BYB but, we've rescued a few Siberian Huskies over the years. They are so close to wolves!

Best are the mixes. We've had them mixed with wolf, German shepard etc.

Akitas are great too. Kill anything small and furry though.

They need lots of exercise and space so they are not for everybody. Ohh and the shedding fur. Definitely not breeds for neat-niks and small apartments.

37. I love my Chessie!
Yank is my second Chesapeake Bay Retriever and the best dog ever. He has impeccable manners and a kind and gentle disposition. He is my constant companion and is welcome everywhere I go.

On the other hand, one year ago today I rescued an Australian Cattle Dog (a blue Heeler) who was being given away because she was out of control, hyperactive, a fighter, a chaser of cars, a harrasser of people, a submissive peeer, you name it but.... a very sweet girl. I could not bear the thought of her in the hands of someone who would just end up chaining her to a tree. So I took her with the aim of giving her some training and then finding her a good home.

When she was dropped off at my house like a wild animal on the end of a chain, my husband asked "Where am I going to live?"

Today, Ding (short for Dingrid Cattalina Wallaroo--changed from her original name of Nemo- which I couldn't live with)is a wonderful companion. She has been socialized with people and dogs, she is obedience trained, adores Mr. Yankeepants and never having been swimming before last year now is considered an hororary Chesapeake. She clears 15 feet off the end of a dock!

I am so proud of her. Here's to The Ding!

I don't know how to post pix or I would.

in his prime - he is a svelte 100 pounds now in his old age (9 1/2)...He is smarter than some of my neighbors, has a great sense of humor, and he once tried to escape from the dreaded VET by jumping into the driver's seat of our car...he looked like he was trying to make it go, but he couldn't quite figure it out...I often wonder where he would have gone if he could have driven the car.

He looks like this guy, but he has his long tail and floppy ears:

especially if they're lab mixes because they're so smart. The best dogs though are always the ones that are properly loved. Good owners make great dogs.

62. have a parson russell here.
Edited on Thu Sep-09-10 06:02 PM by backwoodsbob
Basically a shaggy Jack.

My only fear with her is they are FEARLESS,just like their cousins the Jacks.

Parson pic * not mine*

on edit..the pictured parson russell was long mistook as part of the short haired breed commonly refered to as the Jack Russell.

they aren't.

In January of 1990 the breed was recognized on the 14" standard in England by The Kennel Club as the Parson Jack Russell terrier, a working variant of the fox terrier. The Parson Jack Russell Terrier Club of Great Britain (PJRTC) was composed of working terrier people who felt the breed was seriously endangered by the practices of those who advocated a 10" to 15" standard, and they took the breed to Kennel Club recognition to protect the original standard.

In July of 1997, the Board of Directors of the American Kennel Club unanimously accepted the Jack Russell Terrier into its registry, effective November 1, 1997. On January 1, 1998 the breed became eligible for competition in all AKC events, including conformation participation in the Miscellaneous Class at all-breed shows. The breed was accepted into the AKC Terrier Group on April 1, 2000. On April 1, 2003, the name of the breed was changed from Jack Russell Terrier to Parson Russell Terrier to differentiate the true Parson-type terrier from little generic terriers casually referred to as "Jack Russell". The Jack Russell Terrier Association of America club name was changed to Parson Russell Terrier Association of America (PRTAA). The Breed Standard was revised effective September 29, 2004.

Edited on Fri Sep-10-10 01:03 PM by backwoodsbob
BOTH breeds are recognized now by the AKC.

Basically..the Jacks are the short haired version..the Parsons are the long haired version. It's a MUCH simplified explanation but you get the idea.

My wife rescued our Parson from the local shelter.we weren't told till after we got her...rules according to them...that she was to be euthanized that night...the Parson chose my wife about two hours before closing.

They are a FEARLESS breed. If anyone remembers when my neighbors dog attacked me,a 70ish pound mix..my little 15 pound Parson attacked that dog with everything she had and held her own and probably saved me from far worse than some stitches to the face.Once the neighbor got ahold of the situation and grabbed his dog the little parson grabbed a chunk of ham and held on with all 4 feet off the ground.

VERY protective and loyal dogs.

I have to admit I would take her over either of my shepps and I adore my shepps.

pappipoo. She is the best dog ever and she is litter box trained. She loves people, never nipped or bit and sits on the first lap available. I tell her I need help and she goes to get the person to help me. I did this one day when she was looking out the window, she read my lips and someone came downstairs to help me with groceries. She means the world to me. I have the children ring my doorbell in my area asking if they can play with her. :) :-)

78. I'm a huge dog sap
which means I love them all. I have some fondness-es though:

Labs, for my old boy Beau

I'm a sucker for the sporting group: setters, retrievers, Weimaraners and Vislas

I do generally prefer large breeds to small: rotties, Danes, Boxers, Bernies, NEWFIES!

But the hound group owns me: Bassetts, Beagles, Coonhounds (all), Foxhounds, Ibizan, Pharoah

And most recently I've been smitten with the Basenji

I mean seriously:

They're the cutest little things and I love their spunk and independent nature.

Edited on Sat Sep-11-10 02:36 AM by friendly_iconoclast
The late, great Benjerman had long platinum blonde fur. Being 1/2 Westie he never shed, and despite his foofoo dog appearance he

was built like an Australian Cattle Dog under all that hair.

My then SIL found him astray at her place of employment, and I think his original owner was deaf or hard of hearing as he

rarely barked and if he wanted to alert us to something he would come up and paw at you.

I don't care what anyone says. A well trained JRT is a great dog. People just do not train them or give them the attention and exercise that they need. Our two JRTs that we have had couldn't be better dogs.

My second favorite is an English Bulldog.

Third is a mini Doxie, there are six amongst my family.

Doxies tend to be prima donnas. So I'd say, a dox would try to bully a lab until lab had enough and sat on her.

100. The Catahoula
Here's my Catahoula Leopard mix, Cleopatra Marie:

She is smart, stubborn, high energy, and a lot of fun! Also low maintenance - the vet said to bathe her twice a year, whether she needs it or not.

If I were going to get a smaller "accessory" dog I would look for a Boston Terrier, maybe. The ones I have met seemed very expressive and personable. I like most of them, have owned a GSD, a Newfoundland (great, but the hair and slobber...), a Doberman, and an Austrian Shepherd. Mutts are great, too! I got Cleo thru Petfinders and Vet Adoptions. You can usually find a breed you want that is still a rescue, rather than going through a breeder.

117. It's amazing to think about what she's thinking about.
The pic is gone now for some reason, but it was taken last week on the shore overlooking Lake Superior. Does she even understand that it's beautiful or that she's looking at water as far as she can see?? Is she strictly focused on the sounds and no visual? It seems that way sometimes, like she isn't even comprehending what she's looking at, but you're right in that I'm sure she was enjoying the cool breeze! Thanks for responding.

115. Dogs
no matter the breed, they are a gift to humans. My dog fits my needs and your dog fits your needs that is why we have some many breeds. I love that everyone loves their dogs and takes pride in them. I live in an apartment and a senior so a little dog fits my needs, if I had a yard maybe a larger dog would fit my needs.

My dog is so spoiled but that is okay with me.

I am so happy that those of you who have dogs love them and take great care of them.

:hi: :applause: to dog owners and cat owners. You are very special people.
