I have a hard time believing it. As far as I can tell, its just him saying it, with no verification of any sort. And Ive heard from relatives with reason to know, that bear skull is about the most resilient stuff out there. I believe the quote was something along the line of "if you don't hit them in the eye, where the bone behind it is weaker, all you've done is make them angry". And they were talking about moderately large caliber weapons. With a lot more force than a rock, even from a pitcher.

For blacks bears here in North Carolina, here's some advice:

enough to be not worth eating. Or, as it says, an experienced marksman, with the right conditions, outside a park. Which sounds suspiciously like "unless you know what the hell you are doing, and can shoot straight enough with a bear running at you to hit it in the eye" to me.

If he had said he hit it, and it stopped and went another way, I might believe it. a rock to the head by a pitcher probably isn't going to feel good. But to drop a bear? I suspect our pitcher friend is just trying to get promoted to first string and get a little publicity.

Megler used to be a pitcher--the bear was only about 33 feet away from him--54.5% the distance between the mound and home plate, and for an ex-pitcher to hurl a 90 mph fastball right in the bear's noggin should be enough to stop Smokey right in his tracks. That guy's pitching skills really saved his life, as well as the bear's, if you ask me.
