Poll question: Kmart's or Kmart?
Edited on Mon Mar-29-04 04:07 PM by MrsGrumpy
Growing up in Wisconsin, it was Kmart. It was kind of a culture shock moving to Michigan and hearing stores referred to in the plural. In SE MI it's Kmart's, Kroger's, WalMart's...and this after having to get used to pop instead of soda. Sigh....

So what do you call it?

1. Out of business.
Down here, anyway. :-)

I noticed my dad's family in southern IL called stores plurals as well. I always thought it was sort of odd, too.

I got a good deal on a stereo thingie at the K-Mart here before it closed. I think I bought it at 40% off.

23. I can't count the number of Wal-Marts in this town.
And they want to move from 3 stores and build 3 bigger stores to replace them. Over our aquifer recharge zone! A million times no!

Ugh. Wal-Mart: ptooey! :P

51. Some stores' official names _are_ the plural.
For example, Dillard's. It's in their ads, on their bags; nobody ever calls them Dillard.

Also Sears, except that's not a possessive.

You did forget one variation: the Kmart.
"I'm heading down to the Kmart."
I'm not sure where that falls, geographically.

Here in Indy, some people refer to Eli Lilly & Co. (the pharmaceutical co.) as "Lilly's". For example...

"... and then my neighbor got hired at Lilly's."

Drives me nuts.

4. other than that it reminds me of Grandma --
crap.

But I did use it as a fabulous implement of torture against a psychotic lover. We went there frequently -- don't remember why -- and I always tried to talk her in to having a meal in the cafeteria. She would practically run out of the store to avoid it.

I haven't thought of that in a LONG time. Thanks for the chuckle, Laura. :hi:

10. Oooh! The Kmart Cafe! I'd forgotten!
Now, all discount stores have a little restaurant in front -- usually some "express" version of a fast-food franchise, or a glorified hot-dog stand. But the Kmart Cafes had actual food -- not very good food, but food. Breakfast, even.

Edited on Tue Mar-30-04 11:37 AM by VelmaD
When my brother and I were little we used to LOVE to go to the Kmart cafe for the disgusting, grease-soaked burgers. I think about them now that there's no way in hell I'd eat one. But back then...*drool*

Thanks for bringing back the great childhood memory.

at Hudsons, way back in the 70s. What replaced Kresges there? It was a pretty good size store, and I ate many, many, many lunches there too! And, yup, I put the 's' where the 's' belongs. I never realized other people are not saying K-Marts the right way!

40. No, I'm not...
I remember the "pick-a-balloon sundaes." A line was stretched above the counter with balloons attached. "Pick" a balloon, the counterperson would pop it, and inside would be a strip of paper indicating if your sundae was discounted or free. It was a fun treat as a kid.

37. it isn't plural, it's possessive...
The word "store" is implied when people say KMart's or WalMart's. The apostrophe is a hint that it isn't a plural. That said, most people around me just say KMart, as do I.

41. For me, it depends on whether...
it's an invented corporate name (Walmart, Kmart, Target, Cub, Rainbow) or a person's name (Dayton's, Hudson's, Gump's, Marshall's).

Growing up in Michigan, a lot of people said "Kmart's." In California, no one did.

The store managers there treated us like crap...like we were a bunch of worthless poor people or something.
