Our Universe is truly a beautiful place (pics)
Posted in GD too

Here's a slideshow of award winning astronomy photographs. It helps to put things in perspective for a little while.

I can't steal the photos (unfortunately) but here is one from my photobucket account hoping it'll inspire you to click on the above link.

1. You realize that most of the photographs are colorized, don't you?
Not trying to take away from them of course, but the colorization is to bring out details through the contrast. Most celestial objects are pretty bland in the visible light spectrum.

2. Yes, but I think the aurora ones are not colorized
Nor are the ones taken of trees and snow with the sky as backdrop.

Here's Jupiter. Maybe the colors have been enhanced but there there.

And Earth is colorful too

I don't believe the universe is all that bland

6. I have Astronomy Picture of the Day
as my home page. Really stunning photos, and even if they do colorize some of them, they are colored based the frequencies of the light waves, I think, so these are the colors they would show up as. I don't totally understand the whole thing but I sure do love all the shots.
