Also known as Cabbage to truckers. I'm not sure why they call it Cabbage. I think maybe it's the slight resemblance to a head of cabbage. It's one of those mountain passes that has national fame to truckers. Ask most over-the-road truckers about Cabbage, no matter what portion of the country they're from, and they will likely know exactly what you are talking about.

I took these pictures from a truck stop at the base of the mountain and it may not appear all that impressive from here, but that is a 6 mile 6% grade full of tight curves. I think I counted 3 runaway truck ramps on the way down it yesterday. There were at least 2, anyway. It's one of those deals where if you start too fast from the top, you may not make it down to the bottom. When you are at the top of the hill it looks like you are viewing Earth from an airplane.

are beautiful. First time I ran a mountain with a runaway ramp was back in '77 on Mount Eagle in TN. Scared the crap out of me. Thankfully I had a good trainer (ex-husband) and he taught me right :)

Mount Eagle is another one of those widely known mountain passes, especiallly to the drivers who run a lot over on the east coast. The problem with that one is that I think it surprises a lot of new drivers. I've seen some smoking brakes over there on that mountain.

Beautiful country. And more importantly, numerous bands that I like are out of Portland and Eugene. :)

I've got 4 stops over there in the Portland area, the first one being later today. I'll be heading out here in about a half hour. And you're right about the scenery. Oregon is one of the more beautiful states in that regard.

Very nice pics! Looks like eastern Oregon...I've forgotten just where Pendleton is!

Tends to be dry, and hot, and not much snow in the winter...

8. Pendleton is in far north central Oregon.

Close to the border with Wahington. From here, I-84 runs along the Columbia River and the land starts becoming more forested. :hi:

Mr. Brickbat works on what most railroaders say is the the most difficult stretch in the nation, full of rises and valleys and curves, ending in a 1,000-foot drop to Lake Superior.

Taking big loads, no matter what you're driving, down hills is a real skill and I admire the hell out of anyone who can do it. Keep telling us stories! :patriot:
